Rotate versus Balance mile interval

I've rotated mine every 5K miles, it's about time again and they look the same (wear wise) front and rear. There is no vibrations or unusual wear pattern. When should you have your tires rebalanced versus just rotated? Think I should go to 7K mile rotation/balance, since based on observation and ride they don't look like they need it at 5K miles? I have the Michelin SUV Cross Terrains on mine and I want to get the most wear possible out of them. The reason I'm asking is that I've found over the years that some vehicles are easy on tires and don't need the frequent rotations, wondering if the new 4runner is one of them?

i balance and rotate my tires every time i do an oil change (3500mi). it's free if you buy tires from discount tire/america tire :)

I would stick with the 5k rotation, but (IMHO) it isn't necessary to re-balance tires that are not causing a vibration problem just because it's free. If I don't have a vibration, I would be reluctant to let someone remove all those weights that were working fine, and put new ones back on and hope they do it right.

Wheel weights

Plus, each time they remove and reinstall the clip on wheel weights, it makes little nicks and scratches in the clear coat on your rims! This leads to oxidation!

When I was in the dealership for my 30K service I asked for the stick on weights and they said: "they wern't set up to do stick on weights"!! so I had them rotate only.

I now go to Discount Tire (they have the Hunter GSP9700, which has been recommended here and elsewhere.) They will do the stick on weights if you ask. BTW, I still have the stock Dunlops, and they did the rotate and balace no charge. Didn't even have to ask.

Good post guys. I rotated/balanced my tires for the first time at 14K. This is before Costco changed their policy. (They don't service cars with Non-Costco tires anymore).

I was going to do the 5 wheel rotation, but I found that it wasn't real practical. Now that I'm at 22K, the tires have worn pretty evenly.

Is it okay to drive to 30K, then rotate and balance again?

I am going to 10k rotation and balance based on wear, so far. I have Michelin Cross T's which are just a truck tire, not really an agressive off road tire. And I'm doing five tire rotations. It forces me to check the spare. And I do it at Discount Tire. I bought a life time balance and rotation, rather that pay someone each time.

I guess if we all keep track of how we do, then meet back here next year, we'll be able to exchange some good information.

I have not done the toyota yet but plan to add Ceramic Beads to the inside of the tires instead of the typical balancing weights on the outside. I have done this for my other truck and made a world of difference. So far, 9000 miles on those tires without a problem or vibration.

Not sure if it would impact anything on the inside of the toyota's tires since they monitor the air pressure. Haven't checked it out yet. Just turned 10,000 miles on it this past week. Just found this site.

Well, I know on my pickup, I run 315 x 70 x 16 tires during the summer. They had anywhere from 12 - 17 oz of weights all on the inside of the rims but placed on the top inside and bottom outside (if that makes sense) to balance the tire out due to it's size. I placed 7 oz. of the ceramic beads in and yanked off the weights. No bounce or vibration at all. Even went for a trip to the Carolina's (about 2500 miles total) and those beads actually straightened out my cupping of my front tires due to being a straight front axle on the truck. So I think they work great. But then again, I have nothing on the internals of the rims like I assume the toyota does to monitor air pressure so not sure if this is possible or not. I will probably wait until Spring since winters are on now.

I have my ceramic beads ready for my next set of tires. I added them to my motorcycle and am pleased with the result, even though motorcycle tires come almost perfect anyway.

Adding the beads thru the valve stem was difficult. So, I asked Innovative Balancing for their plastic bags, which they sent. Now I can just place the bag with 5 ounces of beads when the tire is placed on the wheel.

Permanent balance for the life of the tire? I'm excited about that.
