Rotating the Spare?

In the '04 manual, it shows rotating the spare tire as part of the tire rotation. The diagram has the spare going to passenger rear, rear to front, and front to spare.

Does anyone do this with their spare?

I don't see the point when it being there, wear and tear is not taking place. Now rotating the existing 4 wheels I agree with but I do that at the scheduled maintenance.

How often do you guys "need" to get new tires.

yeah but rotating the spare keeps ALL the wheels at around the same treadwear. That way if you ever need to use the spare, it won't be bigger than the tire you are replacing causing your car to wobble. Having mismatched tires tends to do that.

If you ever get a flat, you should replace both tires on the same axel otherwise you're going to get some wierd vibrations. But if your spare tire has the same tread as your other tires, you can just replace that in the mean time... You'll have to worry about your new spare tire though :

i rotate the spare.....and when it comes time to get a set of new tires, i just tell them to choose the one that has the most tread left out of the five and keep it as my spare. then i just have to buy 4 more to drive for another 5000-6000 miles before i rotate again.

I do, and I follow that pattern, with one exception. I cross the two fronts when they go to the rear. This way each tire will eventually get moved to every position, including the spare. I also have a set of 4 REVOs which I use for winter, and I use the same rotation pattern for them. Just means I have to keep a log of when I switch and rotate to keep track of it all.

I rotate using the spare. I don't buy new tires until I need new tires and I plan on keeping the best original tire for a spare when the time comes. Then I'll just rotate the four new ones. I hope they have a decent selection available when my tires need replaced in about a year. I'm averaging right at 3,000 miles a month.

I've always rotated the spare along with the rest of my tires every 5000 miles. I use a spare -> LR, LR -> RF, RF -> LF, LF -> RR, RR -> spare, rotation patern.

This way they all go through every corner of the vehicle and get the same amount of road time. When I get new tires I replace all 5 of them at the same time and start over.
