Rotor size question

If your truck has the smaller rotors can you swap for the bigger rotors and just trim the dust shield or bend it back?

Unfortunately no. The sport brakes use calipers with a deeper groove to clear the larger rotors so you'd need Sport rotors as well. Amemberhasactually done the Sport brake swap. You can search to find the write up.

Hope that helps.

mine has 13WG stamped on the caliper......but my tires/wheels are 17'' mine is 05 sr5...so it means i have the smaller 318mm rotors/calipers?...am correct in going ahead to order the 318mm rotors

Yeah that's a safe bet. Pretty positive that all SR5's have the smaller brakes. Definitely don't go off of your wheel size.

Here's the rotor diameter as indicated by the markings on the calipers:

13WH- 13.3"/338mm rotor diameter
13WL- 12.6"/319mm rotor diameter
13WG- 12.6"/319mm rotor diameter

Follow this info and you will be fine. I have an 08 Limited V8 and it has the 338mm Rotors.

FYI the markings are on the inside of the calipers, so if you don't want to take the tire off, just slide under the vehicle with a flashlight and look on the caliper. I can confirm that the front passenger caliper marking is on top inboard.

I believe that only the Sport models had the 338mm rotors. The 319mm rotors should have a 13WG or 13WL marking on the calipers while the 338mm rotors have a 13WH marking on the calipers. Here's the rotor diameter as indicated by the markings on the calipers:

13WH- 13.3"/338mm rotor diameter
13WL- 12.6"/319mm rotor diameter
13WG- 12.6"/319mm rotor diameter

Answer ^^here !

Just to confirm - our 2006 4Runner Sport with 17" wheels does have the larger rotors running under the 13WH calipers.

Reviving this thread for some help...

A sibling has a new (to him) 04, Limited, 4wd, 4.0 that needs new brakes. When checking for the markings, we found one side to have:

13WL (12.6"/319mm rotor diameter)

while the other side was:

13WG (12.6"/319mm rotor diameter)

While I understand that they are the same size rotors, which means no problem, should these markings match? Does he need to replace one caliper to have the same markings as the other side? Thanks in advance for any help!

Swap from 338mm to 319mm front brakes

I picked up some 2016 Tacoma TRD rims/tires and installed them on my 2004 4Runner Sport. The install was straightforward but backing it out of the shop I heard the telltale scraping of rotor on rim. I didn't realise at that point that the sport used a larger rotor/caliper combo. Now torn between moving the rims on or downsizing the rotor/calipers to the 319mm units from the SR5 and some Ltds. The 13WH calipers are I think the originals so I am leaning towards maybe just swapping to the 13WL or 13WG calipers and 319mm rotors. Reading the threads on here I cannot see anyone having done a conversion that way but a few have gone from 319s to 338s. Is there any reason it would not work? The smaller size should give the extra clearance between the rim and the rotor.
I believe the rears are all the same so I reckon I just need fronts.

no answers here, just another question for my research... is it confirmed that all 4th gen sports (i have a '06) came with the 338s?

should i stick with OEM rotors from toyota or is there a better option out there that won't brak the bank?

Having read and reread the postings on here I think you can assume you have the larger 338mm rotors and therefore the larger calipers marked WH on the caliper body. As others have said before the only way to be absolutely certain is to look underneath for a WH stamped on the caliper body and/or measure the rotor. I would check because I am about to change mine to the smaller SR5 front rotors/calipers so there are no guarantees unless you owned your 06 from new.

Sorry that probably doesn't help you much

My 08 LTD has the WH calipers which translates to the larger rotors. It's always advantageous to use a larger rotor. It will be able to dissipate heat much better.

Where is this code stamped? I just pulled a wheel off and all I can see is 7 30 stamped on the outside edge. I looked at the rotor hub and didn't see anything stamped on it.

Why does this have to be complicated?!?:dammit:

I have 17" original wheels (I am the original/only owner).
The earlier post in this thread said that you can't necessarily base the rotor size on the tire size.
Do you disagree?

I'll take a stab at just measuring the rotor tomorrow.
toyodiy.com will give you the part numbers for this toyota rotors. its actually 338mm for the 17" rims..
i got replacement rotors from autoanything. the power stop z23 have been doing quit well for the last 2 years.

This is not correct, you can have 17" wheels and still have the smaller rotors or the larger rotors, the only way to know for sure is look for the letters stamped on the calipers and or measure the rotor, I would measure the rotor which is a sure way to know which size you have!!

Even using a VIN number search on some parts websites can mislead you when it comes to the rotor size!

Seems odd to me they would put larger rotors on but, from what I understand, the pads are the same size as other models. So, my pea brain tends to think I'm getting the same amount of friction when the brakes are on. It's still a two piston caliper from what I've read.

Other than perhaps better heat dissipation due to more mass and larger surface area, I don't really see the point. I'm not a mechanical engineer though so maybe I'm missing something.

The point you are missing my friend is leverage.

The further out you can position that same size pad, the more leverage it has using the same two pistol caliper.

The load it has to stop is (W)
The rotor is (F)
The 2 pistol caliper is (P)

The larger rotor allows the caliper to work more efficiently. Using less effort to do the same job and therefore increasing your overall breaking headroom.

Hi, what did you end up doing? I have rims available to me and wondering is the downsizing worked.

I had one hell of a time finding mine, i have an 04 SR5 4WD and i ended up having the bigger 338mm, still trying to figure out has that option got on my T4R when its an SR5
