Rotten egg smell. Does it go away???

My brother thought of that and I asked the dealer. The service manager said that you would get the smell regardless of which way the exhaust pipe points.
 
Vacuum

The butt end of the 4runner creates a huge vaccum when moving. The air is sucked back towards the rear window, and if it's open, some of the air will get into the cabin. Even with the sunroof and side windows open, that huge vacuum will overcome resistance and force it's way in.
 
Thanks Mark86, I'll do more research to see what can be done. My bud and I were joking in the truck and he said,"Why not drill holes in the exhuast pipe after the muffler to dilute the smell!" As you can imagine we both started cracking up at the thought of a flute for an exhuast!

Yes. It seems to happen mostly with the rear window opened with the other windows. If the rear window is opened by itself, it does not happen. That is what the bulletin said that Toyota had about this issue.
 
Last week was a really nice day out, and I was in the mood to haul a$$. After doing that for a bit, I smelled the egg smell shortly after.
 
my 2006 4runner i just noticed rotten egg smell when i push harder on gas, and from what im reading its normal, but i think Toyota should do some thing about it, the smell is so bad and i don't even know how unhealthy is it.
 
Awww. I wish we had a sticky on this. The smell is normal and indicates your cat is working. Fyi, much safer than not having a cat on your exhaust. If it annoys you, pay someone to put an angled tip on your exhaust.

But...again. That smell indicates that the needed chemical reaction thst turns your exhaust from bad/dangerous to.health and environment into a safer/cleaner sulfate product....
 
If it makes feel any better, all Toyotas stink! I was behind a nice brand new LS460 that gunned it and the sulfur scent was in full swing!
 
Holy old thread. But if you are within 8 years and 80,000 miles take it to a Toyota deal and tell them about TSB 0342-09. Do a search, lots of talk on here about it.

Is there anyone who has done this exactly and can testify??? I have seen it done and like the look but if it has a practical purpose then I'm sold.


I have found that if I roll down the rear window and the driver side window I don't get the smell unless make quick stops.

Where is the smell permeating from? The CAT? If so is there a cleaner we can run through or anything?

If I used dynomat to seal up the interior would it help lock out the smell?

perhaps we can add a carbon filter to the in-cabin air filter???

This is totally normal.... totally...normal. The degree to which you get a sulfur smell is based entirely on the ratio of the rare minerals inside the cat that coverts bad into good....

It isn't a BAD cat.. it isn't a non-functioning cat... it is... totally normal. I have no idea if Toyota issued that TSB to shut people up, or they modified the ratio just a bit to lesson the Oder... but it does not go away.

I swear..... chemistry lesson here.

If it really annoys you... a. don't drive with rear window down or b. turn the pipe.

Wait, you get this smell in your cabin with all the windows rolled up and ac on? Ok. That is odd and I don't have that....
