rough idle and stalling today

2001 3.4

started up fine today but noticed the idle was rough. went for a short drive into town and it stalled 3 miles down the road when i stopped at a stop sign. started up no problem, went to the bank and it died before i could put it in park.
again started no problem, made one more stop in town, turned off and started no problem, but as i was backing out of parking space it stalled again.
took a few cranks to start and would die before i could shift to drive. checked under hood, looks ok upon intersection inspection. got it started and took off, stalled again at stop sign. two tries and it got going again.
decided no stopping, went straight home. the last time it stalled the CEL came on and the VCS and trac control lights are illuminated now.

its fine while driving, might be a little sluggish, can't really tell, also thought the power steering might have gotten a little heavy before it would stall.

the last few weeks, I've been having an issue with the traction control or so i thought on dry roads, would very briefly cut power and be fine right after.

I have a hobie cat that weighs 400 pounds, and when pulling it out of the water or even the empty trailer, it cuts power, and I get the sound of ABS and the skidding dash light flashes. I thought I was having issues with the traction control but now Im thinking that was early symptom of current problem and making everything wacky.

wires are new in last year, they are the thin blue wires, plugs too, but I don't know what they are, bought the car in march and was told its all been replaced.

should I inspect the throttle body and IACV?
I'll be able to check codes tonight when buddy brings over a scan tool,

idle is rough at 800 rpm, no bouncing or fluctuating, if I rev it steady at 1200 or more its smooth

thanks

It could be a multitude of things.. Best thing to do is just wait till you can pull codes before going tearing stuff apart.

I agree, pull codes. If you are getting a lean condition code than I suspect bad fuel pump. Same symptoms I just had when my fuel pump failed. I could smack the tank to get her going and drove it over 150 miles like that stopping every 10-20 miles. It sucked ass!

Roger, waiting to pull codes. I have noticed mpg down 2-3 over course of summer

I also was losing mileage. I have never seen over 19mpg on any calculation I have done for mileage. My first highway calculation after pump replacement was 21.5mpg. But after an entire tank it leveled out to around 17-19mpg on highway.

I recently had stalling at idle with rpm's dropping to 400-500rpm. Everything ran well at speed. No Codes. Removed and cleaned throttle body and IAC which fixed it. Not difficult and only cost about $10 for new gaskets. Inexpensive first thing to try rather than starting by throwing expensive parts at the problem.

Pulled throttle body off, I do not see the idle air control valve. I read that not all 2001 runners have it? I'm stumped here, my work schedule is preventing me from getting it scanned until The weekend. Did they phase out the valve, making the throttle body/valve non serviceable?

also by being curious, i pulled the cap off the throttle position sensor? its the one that plugs into the wiring harness, its black. once off I could see the gears that rotate the throttle plate. the holes to mount the cap are oblong, guessing its for throttle adjustment? there wa yellow paint on on of the screws, i lined it back up but i don't think its correct.

before i took it off, i noticed the plate opened to about 45 degrees or so, no that i put it back on the plate opens a full 90 degrees, Im not sure this is correct?

throttle body is not very dirty, just a little black gunk around the parameter of the plate.

have not tried to restart it yet, I'm afraid to.

everything i find online says these are not adjustable, but mine clearly looks like it is,

I'm not sure but I think the throttle on the '01's is driven by an electric motor (drive by wire). The throttle on my '00 is mechanical and the IAC is removable and cleanable - I don't think that is the case for the '01. It appears to be integrated into the throttle body. Rockauto lists the same IAC part number for the '00 and '01 but I question that. There is a fair amount of confusion out there in cyberspace on this - maybe somebody can else can confirm.

Also - I think I am seeing that you can't just buy a TPS for that '01 like you can for the '00- you have to replace the whole throttle body - not sure why. It seems to be a 4 wire TPS for '01 and a three wire for '00.

I hope you had a chance to clean that little black gunk around the parameter of the plate when you had the throttle body apart. It's good to keep that area clean even though it only looks not that much.
I agree, when you pull the codes it will clue you in more to whats happening to the low speed idle issue.

Toward the front or the rear of the car? You can open it in either end.

01 and 02 4runners, have a fly by wire throttle system with an electronic throttle control as opposed to my 00 and earlier which have 100% mechanical linkage with a tps(throttle position sensor) to give feedback to the engine computer. In 01-02 you have a mechanical linkage still, but the throttle plate is moved by a motor inside the throttle body instead of 100% manually by your foot.

I hope that info is correct and this was able to clear up some confusion.

If ever question about year options, look at the buyers guide and the Toyota 4runner info website. It gives you year to year changes.

truck stalls out

I have a 95 4unner 3.4 swap from a 97 t100.
Truck stalls out on me after driving for a bit. Can't figure out the issue.
It's a manual swap from a auto. and the truck dies while im in gear.
any help would be greatly appreciated

Might have better luck with a new thread and some more info. So the 4Runner is a standard - right? Any more info on when it dies? RPMs, any error codes, or other information might help. Was the motor sitting for a while pulled before you did the swap? Have you checked the fuel pressure? A clogged/dirty fuel filter can wreck havoc and have you chasing fumes for a while if it is the source of the problem. Lots of possible rabbit trails to chase here.

Could be as simple as a bad pcv valve grommet , iac has buildup or bad needs cleaning or replacing.(junkyard or oem) fuel filter ever been replaced? if not then worth a shot. Check codes also.
