I had my muffler/tailpipe replaced on my 2004 4Runner. The tailpipe was broken off where it meets the muffler. Before replacement the car would vibrate while decelerating. I thought it was the drive train but 2 dealership mechanics couldn't find the problem and thought it was unrelated to the broken tail pipe. After replacing the muffler at a national chain store, the vibrating problem went away. However, the car then developed rough idle on cold starts. The morning after the muffler replacement the check engine light came on after starting w/ rough idle. Took it back to mechanic who read the check engine code and said it was a faulty ignition coil. Although suspicious, I had the coil replaced and picked up the car the next day. When the mechanic started the car, it idled rough and the check engine light came on again. He began monitoring the codes as the vehicle warmed up. He said the codes were different and not related to the ignition coil. He acted confused by what he was reading. After a couple minutes the car warmed up and began idling well. He then said the engine light came on because he Seafoamed it the day before and that I just needed to burn off the residual Seafom. I've driven about 100mi since. The car runs smoother and gets about 2mpg more but still idles rough on cold starts although far less noticeable.
I'm aware that the mechanic screwed me on the ignition coil as there's no reason to put Seafoam in a vehicle that simply needs a new coil. And yes I did ask for (and have) the "bad" coil.
Might the idling problem be related to a flow issue with the new muffler? It's not OEM. The mech. says the muffler system has no sensors.
Are there check engine codes for bad/fouled injectors? Might this be why he Seafoamed the engine?
Given the improvement I've noticed in engine performance would a professional injection cleaning be warranted to further improve performance and perhaps eliminate the remaining cold idle issue?
