Rough Idling on 4runner 2003

Are you in a V8 or a V6 engine?

the p0300, p0351, p0353, p0355 indicate you have missfires on all cylinders on the driver side. The p0300 idicates you have multiple engine missfires.

the p0011, p0016 these are telling you that your crank and cam positioning sensors are getting false readings..

the fact that the one whole side of your engine isnt firing properly you have to ask yourself what to all these cylinders have in comon. answer: the cam shaft, what does the cam shaft have to do with the cylinders firing, answer it opens the valves to let fuel in at the right time and exhaust out at the right time. how would this not allow the clinders to fire? answer: the cam pully's timing is off. If you in a V8 The belt has slipped or jumped teeth causing the timing to off a few degrees. DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE UNTIL THE TIMING BELT IS REPLACED!!!!!!! the 4.7L V8 is the only interference motor toyota makes if your belt breaks or timing is off bad enough you can detroy the entire top end of your motor!!

If its a V6 the timing chain has stretched or been damaged and allowing for improper timing you need to replace the chain, the V6 is not an interference motor and its not as dangerous to run the engine in the senario just dont run it more than you have to and under stand that because the cylinders arn't firing the pistons are just sucking gas when they can and pumping gas into your exhaust this is causing the codes for all the oxgen sensors to go off.

Main point you need to change your timing belt/chain and all componants related to the timing belt drive assembly. while your in there its typically a good idea to replace the water pump as you dont want to do the same job twice later if the water pump goes out. once your timing is back on track all the other codes should go away. Any codes that remain may indicate you've damaged something by running the engine without proper timing set. if you have any issues after getting your timing belt/chain fixed keep it posted i sould be able to help you out further from there.
I have the same problem , I use a V8 4runner 2003 and my 4 plugs are firing , the suv is jerking and not firing fine what do I do.

If your having the exact codes come up as I described then your going to need to replace your timing belt.

nope the 4.7 2uz-fe is the only interference motor toyota's produced

This is not quite correct as the 3MZ 3.3 L V6, 3.0 L I6 2JZ, and 1.8 L I4 2ZZ were all interference motors (just some off the top of my head). From the 3 mentioned, the 3MZ and the 2JZ had timing belts.

Oil Control Valve Filter

Last night I got a rough idle on my 2005 v6 4Runner and I suspect that one of the oil control valves is stuck. I'll get the codes pulled later today.

The oil control valves were replaced about 8 months but there was no mention on the invoice about an oil control valve filter being cleaned or replaced. Is there such a filter on this engine and if so where is it located. If there is such a filter I would like to replace it to help prevent this issue in the future.

I have searched but haven't found any information about an oil control valve filter on this specific engine.

Idle and running issues on a 2005 6cyl SR5

Hello All,
I hope you can help me I am kind of having the same issues with my 4Runner, but mine get worse. I've had mine since Sept. of 2016, I bought it with 165K on the vehicle. I was having no issues till 2 months ago when I was coming home from my Girlfriends house 1 hour away. I pulled up to a stop light and all of a sudden it started sputtering and died. I tried to start it and it would start but idle really rough and die within a minute. I called for a tow and waited 1 hour for the tow. Finally I tried it again after the hour and it started right up and ran no issues no issues. This was after 30 min of driving. I didn't have an issue for another week and thought it was a glitch. it happened to me again, this time while i was going to my girlfriends, after about 45 min it started to sputter and die. I waited 45 min and it started for a little while then died again, it did this multiple times that night and so I got it to my mechanic. After $520 dollars and 2 weeks he determined it was the throttle body sensor and replaced it 2 x while he had it. The Truck started to work and I drove it for another week thinking it was fixed then I was stranded again. this time I brought it back to the machanic and he had it 1 month and went over it from grill to tail pipe and it kept doing it when he thought he fixed the issue. Btw he replaced the throttle body again and put in ground straps just in case of a short. He traced the electic system and has 80% determined it is the ECU and is not sure enough to replace it. So I bring my case to you any suggestions? Please help I'm despreate but love my 4 runner other wise.

Thanks

Jason

No, just examples of interference motors with Timing belts made by Toyota.

The forum is forever greatful for your contributions...

Hate to hear you're having trouble, always sucks when they just won't run right. The issue your describing sounds more like a fuel delivery issue, more than a timing issue. Not sure of the quality of your mechanic but the if he knows his stuff no reason not to take his advice. All you could really do is take it to someone else for another diagnosis. With you describing it working, then not, then working again. It sounds like a faulty connection in the circuit for sure. If the circuits good all the way back to the ECU then you've found the fault. Only other thought would be a fuel pump going bad starting and stoping. Hope you get things worked out!

03 4RUNNER runs rough

I always brag on my Toyota, how well it runs, how it still looks good and runs great for amount of miles, but….. My 03 with 325k miles has recently started running rough. I put the OBDII reader on it at AutoZone and it said Mass Air Flow Sensor, so I put on a new one. It did a little better but seems to have gotten worse. Had codes cleared also disconnected battery and hooked back up. It still reads mass airflow. A mechanic said it sounds like the cam shaft sensor. So I changed it today. It seemed to help but still runs rough, sputters, etc. All Coil packs and plugs were changed a few months ago, so they are fairly new too.
What could be the issue? I’m now thinking the timing chain and related comments might be the issue.
