hey guys im new to toyota and this form and i know im probably not suppose to not start a new form like this but im getting really aggravated with my new to me 4runner.

the issues im having is it runs rough very shakey at idle worst in gear. and smells heavy of like charcoal out of the exhaust. the truck doesnt smoke at all. it used to shut off at complete stops but i replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the mass air flow sensor, and seafoamed it. then it stopped shutting of at stop signs unless im setting there awhile. coolant and oil are full an clean. it just has a misfire it feels like and that awful smell. crusing on highway on the gas feels fine feel the miss around 1500rpms bad to.

clogged cat? what do you guys think?

That's a tough one man. With the misfire you need to do a compression test. That will narrow it down. One cylinder misfiring will cause some crazy vibrations at varying rpms.
I've seen impressive power loss from a clogged cat but not this.
a new muffler will smell like metal for a while...?

yea it still has all the original exhaust and everything. i cant even put the back window down it makes me sick its horrible. i hate i dont have tools for compression test. waiting for my buddy to bring a code reader. would a bad cat cause hesitation and and light misfire. anything else i should try?

alright ill gut them out and see if it changes anything then i just need to find out how to trick the o2 sensor to think there still there has anyone done that resistor in the wire or spark plug foulers ? does it work on these i used to work onlitle imports like subarus and stuff were i did away with cats anyway so i never knew what a bad one does.

and that$pit i would miss that car to. hard to get ahold of now of days thats what i was tryin to get before this.

haha you good with a soldering iron and boards? you need to make an closed loop circuit and hook up into sensors position tied to a dial so you can manually adjust the ratio, very very complicated.....i wanted to ditch the cats to and that's what i came up with and decided it was to hokey and to much hassle.....

here's some good basic info
How to Tune Closed Loop and Open Loop o2

and if you got some really big balls and want to try this.

lol

Ya, if I didnt spend so much money on guns and at some point do up the runner like id like to. I WILL have another one, id even settle for a second gen

wow alot more complicated then subarus lol them u can just solder a 5 cent resister in the wire thats it, all i would get is a p0420 code right? i dont have to have emissions just see a annoying cel light

not 100% sure and there maybe easier ways, that's just what i came up with when i was looking into it about a year ago, from my understanding though both sensors actually send adjustment data to the ecu and some math happens, lol, again i don't really know this is just my half assed understanding of it, try the performance section and see if any of those guys have actual done this and let us know what YOU come up with, that was just my understanding of what it would take.

I had some of the symptoms. My never died and I didn't notice an odd smell. I had terrible vibrations at idle and it sounded like it was struggling to run. I also had a steady decline in performance for several months, until it finally got the point that it was just a gutless mess trying to merge onto the freeway.

I had my shop test a few things, and it turned out to be the cat. It was at about 180K miles. The cat had just disintegrated in it's housing. They dumped all kinds of crap out of it when they replaced it.

With a new one on there it was back to running fine. It was suffocating though....which was causing my symptoms.

At 200K+ it seems that your exhaust would be the most suspect thing and easiest to start with.

yea thats what im starting to think. gettin kinda hard for me not havin a job an all right now though and those cats are pretty exspensive thank god i live in pa and dont have the california stuff to deal with lol

ok just got some codes out of my truck and its givin me
air temp sensor malfunction
heated circiut malfunction
and coolant temp sensor fuel control malfunction
an p1135

ok i did some more running after clearing codes now its only giving me 2 its po301 cylinder 1 misfire and the P0125 Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Fuel Control. i start it up random times in a day it will smoke alot real quick then go away a light colored blue then seems to run better doesnt shake that bad. the dealership i traded a good running car for must be laughing there asses off at me. what have i got my self into 0.o
