rough start/low idle on start

Ok, So, the other day Nquaint, Markdarling and I went 4wheeling, it was one of the dustiest roads ever,

after we were done, I was showing them my K&N CAI and i opened up the hood and found my air filter had fallen off... I suspect it was way earlier during the bumpy part, and so I suspect it sucked up a TON of dust and dirt...

Im surprised I didnt notice throttle issues earlier, but I noticed that when I start the 4runner now, the 4runner will idle too low and die if I dont rev the engine a few times,

I cleaned the MAF and the throttle response is way smoother, but when I start the truck, for the first 2 min or so, it wants to die and I have to keep revving the engine to keep it going, then its fine. and idles smooth and quiet, just like normal.

I remember someone else having this same problem... any thoughts/solutions??

I would start with taking the TB off and cleaning it, the IAC, and the intake plenum (as best as you can) and inpect for dirt/mud. My guess is that some dirt made it's way into the IAC and it's not opening/closing as good.

yeah, figured as much, need to get some Throttle body cleaner...

IAC??? im sure im gonna say duh when you spell it out... I cant figure out what that is right now..

It's the Idle Air Control valve and it's screwed to the bottom side of the TB. You can get a new IAC gasket (rubber) and a new TB gasket (metal) from the dealer for <$10 for both so you might want to do that (even though they are re-useable). Yotatech has a few tech articles on how to clean the IAC/TB, I'll look for them later for ya but I gotta go back to work right now.

you ever find those articles?? I thought it had fixed itself but apparently not,

its super intermittent, the engine will die on me at random times, it was fine all day until yesterday evening on Wed, and then started dying at stop lights,

and then was fine all morning til this evening and then started dying again, idling too low at stop lights...

I prob gotta clean the throttle body and air intake valves... I could prob do it without the article but I want to see whats what...

thanks, it was kinda what I thought, although I didnt think about taking apart that solenoid though...

not sure I will do that, my problem is not as severe as the one he was having,

I had the same problem as you and it was the IAC. Ended up replacing mine at the dealership, so I paid too much I'm sure.

Just so you understand it,

A IAC, allows the air to flow around the throttle plate when its closed. If it was dirty I can defiantly see this causeing it to die.

I would be curious to see this done in action... probably not a bad idea for anyone with a 3rd gen, regardless if symptoms have shown up yet or not...

so far we're planning a radiator swap, fuel filter, spark plugs, K & N air filter (okay hold your catcalls please) brats and burgers. All for an 01 Limited.

Nice! well, I plan on taking care of this prob tomorrow am, but I do need to do a fuel filter... what time were you meeting on the 27th?? I have to be at work by 12:30p on weekends, but I may be able to take another hour or two if I need to.

I wonder why it wouldnt idle right?!?!

I finally took apart the air intake and found some of the problem, I cleaned the MAF again for the 2nd time this month, Idling very nicely now, smooth and feels like more power, just got a new tank of gas, cant wait to see the MPGs skyrocket to 30mpg!!

I thought about taking off the entire throttle body and cleaning it, but I dont really have the time energy this month...

I used almost a whole bottle of Throttle body cleaner and its running super smooth right now, so Ill leave it be for a few weeks, at least til after my sons 4th bday.

Why would I do an oil change?? the dust/dirt never touched my oil?? the fuel/air mixture stays completely separate from the oil... if I was burning oil I would have another issue altogether.

now on the other hand... my sister NEEDS an oil change, her friend left her oil cap off and she didnt know it for like 2 weeks til I did her brakes and found it missing, luckily, the engine is fine and running well.
