rough starts on cold mornings

any idea's....pretty much on mornings when it is cold out i have to crank and crank to get my 91 to turn over and start.....the starter is pretty new, new plugs and wires, recent tune up and always change my oil at 3k

You might need a new cold start injector, otherwise if it's a 22R-E, they had common issues with the fuel pump relay, sometimes the relay won't kick in the fuel pump right away. Check out project 4crawler for a quick fix on that.

First off, in Florida what's a cold morning? If you're havin trouble starting at like 50-60 degrees, then it's not a cold start prob - it's just a starting prob. Unless you live elsewhere now.<br><br>Dumb question: how's your battery?

battery is new and it is usually on days where it is 55 or lower....today our area it was 33 this morning....i didnt even attempt

All I can say is below 55 is still not much of a cold start. I've had three 4Runners and the only time I've had real problems with starting (and it still would crank over, just took longer) is below 5. Generally I don't even worry unless it's -10, or colder.<br><br>Like I said before it sounds like something other than just a cold starting problem. Is your engine oil too dense? Or maybe something is sticking or hanging up when it's colder, or more humid. Sorry, that's all I got

I agree with Colorado Dan. Check your oil.

I was having problems starting when it was cold and I moved to the right oil weight and synthetic, and it starts when its -37 (Yes, it does get that cold here).

If you live somewhere, where the temperature fluctuates a lot between summer and winter, make sure you adjust your oil weight accordingly.

It sure does make a difference.

im using 10w-30 im located near Tampa Bay Florida.....is that to heavy of an oil? ......the coldest it gets hear is low 30's and thats only maybe 7 days out of the year, if that.....

if that was the only problem then i would say yes, but usually it is a combination of problems; or in my experience anyway.

i had hard starting a while back (worse when cold), and i changed spark plugs, wires, cap + rotor then sea foamed the engine and the problem was solved.
