RPM fluctuation while accelerating

I’m having some RPM fluctuations while accelerating, I can hear them, and I can see them slightly on the tach. Anyone know what could be causing it? It idles fine. Only happens when I’m on the gas. Thanks!

I hope you aren't asking about the transmission shifting through the gears... ???

Is the acceleration strong and fairly constant? If so, it is supposed to do that...

No sir. I’m no that slow. It also fluctuates when holding the pedal at certain speeds as well.

I'm guessing you have an auto?

Could it be the A/C compressor kicking in?

Actually I never ran the A/C until after this started happening. It’s so subtle you can hardly tell it’s happening on the needle. I can hear it more than anything.

Also yes, auto.

Mine also is an auto, putting the AC on does not change it. It does not stay at a constant RPM, it s a slight fluctuation. I don't know if this is related but from a cold start it does the fluctuation thing, if I turn the car off and restart it it will bog down about 30 seconds later and stall out if I don't power through it with a nice heavy gas pedal and still has the fluctuating RPMs. No CEL ever comes up but if I drive the car for a while and it is sitting in traffic, it will start with a lumpy idle and will stall out unless I put the AC on, this seems to increase the RPMs enough to stop it stalling out. If it does stall out, starts again no problem but will bog down again unless I give it heavy gas while in Drive. Had the issue for years. Would love to get it fixed.

it's hard to say it's the exact same issue. but i really observed it going down the freeway. even though i felt sure if it was going lean it would set a code, i felt like it was a fuel delivery issue. i started with the fuel pump and pressure regulator but didn't fix it. anyway, i took it to toyota so they could put their computer on it, and the front O2 was showing lean (no codes set). The fix was replacing the injectors. could be you just have one or two misfiring, and you might see that one the spark plugs; I just wanted a new set if i was going to change them. She purrs like a kitten now.

Have you checked your spark plugs ? Could possibly be a malfunctioning fuel injector. Especially if it happens when it warms up.

The first thing I did when i bought the truck was put new plugs, wires, and coils in it. Never an issue until maybe two weeks ago.

Wouldn’t hurt to check the resistance on the injectors. And what coils, plugs and wires did u go with ?

The other thing with my truck that I forgot to mention is that after I shut it off, there is a strong gas smell at the rear drivers side. Is there an easy way to diagnose if it is injectors? don't know how much time and money I want to pour into this. My truck is a 2000, just turned 94000 miles and I have had it since 2005. Looking at a new blue TRD Pro. Maybe that is the way to go. My wife will not drive it as she doesn't trust that she wont get stranded.

94k? THATS IT???? Easy way to diagnose them is check the resistance. Or you could unplug one by one and see if the engine changes in idle. But if it’s not throwing a code it’s hard to say.... I’d simply check for resistance with multi meter. I think factory spec is 13.6 and maybe all your injectors are good. But at least you’ll know.

Is your MAF sensor clean? Rear driver side is where the gas tank is. Right under the rear seat

MAF was swapped out last year when I had timing belt service was done, it was kicking out a CEL (had cleaned it previously went bad again), plugs and wires were done about 15000 miles ago. Where would I check the resistance? Would I have to take them out?

Quick update on my particular situation, I had a small leak where the crossover pipe meets the cat, so I fixed that and she’s running amazing now.

Interesting about the leak at the cat. I have a similar issue with mine when driving on the freeway between 50-60. All I’ve found on the forums are that it’s an injector issue. So I was going to send them to whichhunter performance for them to clean up and rebuild.

Does yours act like this? Small video I took of the rpms fluctuating.
