rpms???? newbie question

hi guys,

just got my 06 4 runner...runs like a champ...the only thing that has me concerned is the RPMs...they seem to be low...I guess I am used to my old car (05 maxima)....when i would be cruising (40-50) the rpms were 2200 to 2500 and at highway speeds 60-80 the rpms would be in the 3000.. my toyo's rpms are alot lower they hover around 1000-1500 in the city and at 70 mph its only at 2000 rpms...?? is that normal???

any info would be greatly appreciated...

Yes it is normal, you have a 5 speed transmission. 5th gear is overdrive. Your first vehicle revved so high engine wear must have been horrible.

I think you should review your facts. just because our engines rev lower and rev at different speeds on the road than other vehicles does not mean more engine wear.

certain vehicles are geared for different purposes.

ie- honda prelude- revs are around 4400rpm at 75-80mph...

chevy vette- revs are barely at 2k rpm going 80...

Hardly. My '93 Maxima turns ~3000 RPM @ 75 MPH. Runs like a top and doesnt leak any oil at 245k miles.

Just because the Nissan engineers geared the transmission to optimally use the power of the engine at cruise does not mean that it also puts in abnormally high engine wear. You cannot generalize engine wear by RPMs at cruising speed.

The higher a engine revs the shorter its life expectancy plain and simple. You may not think that statement is intelligent but it is also common sense.

Yup, it's consistently on the list of Ward's 10 Best Engines. The 2GR-FSE from the IS/GS350 just made it too.
 
The engines in Toyota trucks are specifically designed and tuned for a truck, low RPM torque.

OK, Yes, I will agree. In general terms the faster an engine runs the faster it is wearing on internal parts. i.e. A Honda indy-car engine that turns 14,000 RPM during a race is not going to last as long as my Toyota V8 in my 4runner.

OK, you made your point, however, look at your statement:

The Nissan V6 was engineered to run at those RPMs during cruise and normal driving conditions and just because it runs faster than a Toyota truck engine does not mean the Nissan V6 will have "horrible" engine wear.

I still stick to my position that your first statement was incorrect, misleading and just plain dumb to say.
 
A Honda Indy car revving at 14k is made for performance and not reliability.

When any car company develops a motor they do it to balance both reliability and performance. A 4 cylinder and many smaller displacement 6 cylinder vehicles need revs to produce the power that an V8 makes off idle. Just because a car revs higher at highway speeds does not mean it will wear out faster. Look at the history of the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla for example. Both are 4 bangers with three and four gear transmissions meaning higher revs at highway speeds and these cars consistently last 200,000 miles, easily.

When a car revs at 3000 rpms from the factory with no modifications, it is because that is what it needs to do in order to balance performance and reliability.

welcome to the forum. to get this thread back on subject, at highway speeds, your truck will turn lower rpms, due to the overdrive (a gear ratio of less than 1:1 to keep it real simple). because you have a strong engine with a good amount of torque, like koz stated, toyota chose the gear ratio to blend driveability with highway fuel economy. sometimes, i will look at the dash of another vehicle i am passing on the higway to compare engine speeds. usually, cars are at 3k rpm or greater. like you said, it runs like a champ! and it is running perfectly normal. enjoy the fact that you can cruise the highway with your engine purring along quietly.
 
My Mercedes Turbo Diesel ran at high speeds at rpm's above 3100 all day long.

The engine and drive train were designed for optimal torque and performance at the higher rpm's

These engines easily could get 250,000 miles plus on 'em with no engine problems.

The power at 3100+ rpm's was incredible and the acceleration was instantaneous.
 
My Cummins redlined at 3100 RPMs yet I cruised the interstate at 2600 or so at 75-80mph. A cummins WILL last at least 350,000 miles before you have do any major maint. Oh yeah my truck weighed just shy of 7000 lbs with all the junk I had to run around with for work, and gave me 18+ mpg highway and I could idle around in 6th in town and pull down 30+mpg. Most efficient vehicle I've owned. Spin that motor if its designed to, just change your oil regularly.

Ever notice how far off their MPH is compared to ours? I've seen it easily 5 MPH is either direction.

*NOTE: this is assuming you are not passing them but rather traveling equal speed (or maybe this is better stated, travelling side by side without one going "faster" than the other) LOL

Your RPM's are normal, but not all 4Runners run the same RPM at speed. My 02 auto w/ 4.10's is very close to the numbers of your new Runner, 70 is about 2,000 or a hair over. Now my 00 Runner w/ the 2.7 and 5 speed w/ 4.56 gearing was like your Maxima, 70 was about 3,000, if I went 80 I was running 4,000. The 4 banger actually had more power in 5th than my V6 has in 4th, both O/D, simply because it was much closer to it's power.

I've compared my vehicle speed w/my gps unit and it is dead on w/the speedo
