RSCA button (who actually remembers to use it)

Question about the RSCA button. I think it only exists on 10-13 models.

It is suppose to disable the rollover side curtain airbags to avoid accidental deploy when offroading in extreme terrain.

However, I usually forget to push it (since you have to push for 3 seconds each time you start the truck). I've been at some pretty extreme angles.. and never had the airbags go off.

Just wondering what others have experienced and if they really did something different in 2014 or did they just remove the button.

I would also like to know a little bit more about the 2014+ changes to the system. Are their any or did they just make it so that you cannot disable it?

After reading the owners manual cover to cover and then religiously turning of the RSCA the first three off road treks - - For the past dozen treks I've forgotten all about it! Until you just brought it up - - -:fish:

I was talking to trd about this last week. The system is never fully disabled. The button just increases the angle the bags will deploy. The 2014 and up models is supposed to be automatic. I'm guessing the determining factors would be speed or 4wd engagement ect. Either way they will still go off during a flop or roll. I saw this happen last week.

They changed it precisely for the reasoning listed above. People would forget, get it in a hard side angle and the airbag would go off because they forgot to push the button. Now the parameters are programmed in so you don't have to remember.

I've been at angles where the truck went up on two wheels momentarily and no deploy... I'm guessing the sensor is more than just angle....

I need to build something that will automatically trigger it each time the truck is started. I think it already is setup to only enable in 4wd.

Angle, angular velocity, lateral velocity and drive mode plus a few others. Lots of conditions have to be met before an airbag will blow.

I remember four wheel drive mags blowing a few on Chevys just blasting around sand dunes :wacko: I really just wish we did not have them at all.

This is more what I am afraid of, the vehicle misinterpreting something like a jump or a steep drop off a rock as an impact. Which reminds me I need to wire my RSCA to turn off the airbag module.

Good lord. I'm somehow doubting that the truck frame was built for that. Airbag was the least of the problems I saw with that. Looked like he bottomed out his front suspension hard!

I've done some decent jumps like that in my 4th gen (surprised the airbags didn't go off now that I think about it) it's not as bad as you'd think, least my frame is okay...

Jumping a 4k+ vehicle is almost always a bad idea, yet it is typically something we all want to try when the opportunity arises.

The art of jumping anything is landing the transition. Over or under and you are SOL.

That was a decent hit, I would guess that just barely hit the deceleration threshold for the airbag to go off. Screencap is at the apex of his compression stroke, which is right when it deployed.

^That is the kinda a sh!t that totals a truck :thumb: Saw that a while ago, it left me a little speechless... for a second. But hey those method rims held up nicely

Old thread but I'm curious if anyone knows whether the wiring for the RCSA runs through the front 4wd control module?
