RTT and Surfboards

Does anybody have a good system down for transporting a RTT and surfboards at the same time? I have searched this forum, and several others but it seems to be a fairly widespread problem. Is the answer that simple? Is it just not possible if the board isn't short enough to fit in the cab?

I am looking into a bajarack Utility flat rack, and a CVT Mt. Rainier Pioneer and feel pretty good about that set-up. I am just getting into surfing, and am ultimately not positive what length board I will end up on. I'm trying to plan from about 9' down.

You could try a vertical kayak rack and mount a surfboard. I have seen that done. Doesn't look pretty but it looked like it worked no problem

I've got absolutely zero experience with surfboards but I've been thinking about how I could carry a 14 foot kayak up there...

My thoughts have led to a 'rack on a rack' system that would hold the kayak above (not on) the RTT. For my Mt Shasta, I have room that I could do this before and after the RTT. I don't know the width (fore/aft) of the Mt. Ranier so I can't tell you if that would work for you.

Another option that wouldn't work for my kayak but could possible work for you is to mount the surfboard(s) 'outrigger style'. This would require something that would attach to the vertical supports of a basket style rack that would allow you to store the surfboards on the long edge outboard of the RTT.

I have a Gobi Stealth and absolutely love it.

do you have the tent yet? Alucab tents offer optional crossbars and will support a surfboard.

i would imagine that one could strap a board to the top of a soft top tent, although it would ride pretty high and might be prone to lift at higher speed

Kinda in the same boat with summer approaching and needing to figure how to take my paddle board with me (RTT on as I'd be camping too). The best idea I've come up with, given I usually only travel with my dog, is trying to fab up a mount to hang the board somewhat along the passenger side. Half above my rack and other half hanging slightly over the doors.

What about longer (66-70") Yakima crossbars and their J-shaped kayak holders? Then you could carry the board(s) on it's side.

I was pondering this myself, as I'm about to purchase a roof rack and later on a RTT. I concur with the above Denver Outfitters RTT and the Tepui RTT, both hardshells with cross bars on top.

Another option would be something like this:

It does stick to the side, but takes up mounting space on the side of the roof rack also, so not really sure how it would work in conjunction with a RTT. I would contact Front Runner for further details, and if you do, be sure to share the details!

I haven't really considered the hard shell tent option simply dues to size. I need a three person tent. The vertical kayak mount and front runner ideas are intriguing though. Does anybody have experience with front runner racks? I'm definitely starting to see people shy away from Baja, but I don't think I've seen much feedback in front runner.

I haven't bought anything yet, and I'm loving the ideas and feedback. I know in a few months my credit card will hate me for the rack, tent, drawers, and fridge.
