Rubber floor like the FJ Cruiser, help

I am wondering if anyone here has done a DIY project, ditching the carpet for a rubber type floor like the fj or honda element (only two I know of)

I have two large dogs who are often going on adventures with me, I have the weather tech cargo floor and under it is in amazing condition but its where the seats fold up that has hair imbedded, cleaning scrubbing etc has not proven to be clean enough for me. In hind site I should have addressed this area but I cant take the years back, haha.

Links on projects would be great or suggestions on material I should use. Ideally I would like something kind of grippy for the pups too.

Holy smokes, I was just thinking about this the other day when I was vacuuming mine out from my two big dogs. I've thought about cutting plywood to cover the back of the seats and cover them with rubber matting or bed liner and screwing them in. I'll be interested to know what others have done here, if any.
 
You should probably look into getting sheets of rubber I am sure you can get those somewhere. Pull out everything from the inside of the car, and use the orig carpet as a template.

I had a sport trac and they came with the plastic flooring. I laughed the first time i spilled coffee on the floor.
 
I thought about doing this as well, I was looking at an FJ Cruiser before I settled on the 4Runner for this reason. After owning the 4Runner and seeing how they did it in the FJ Cruisers I have to say its a pretty good idea.

The only complaint I would have with it is that its cut and installed like a carpet (both good and bad) and so could allow liquids to seep in the holes and edges where components and harnesses come through.

I thought about using one of those companies that will make a custom Vinyl bottom for your car like in Taxis, Cop cars, ect... but they cost alot and again run into the issue with the holes for harnesses and such. I think if I am going this route I'm going to do a wire tuck and rhino line the entire bottom floorpan or something...

That was my plan as far as the template and pulling all the interior, obviously that will have to happen

I was hoping someone out there some where had done this and found a "good" rubber material to use. Hoping someone had done that leg work for me haha.
 
Had a GMC 2500 Yukon former Union Pacific Railroad fleet vehicle, and the entire floor from front to back was one giant piece of durable rubber. Was one of the nicest parts about the vehicle in that never needed loose car mats, just took a wet towel to clean it off. This would definitely be a great thing in the offroad world. (or dog owner as well)
 
Just did this today... Thought I'd share. I bought some vinyl scraps from a local fabric store that almost matched the gray in my 4runner for around $10. Popped the back seat panels off and traced them on the vinyl sheet (with room to fold the vinyl around the outside). Cut it out and used a spray on adhesive on both the seat back and new vinyl covering. Once that was stuck on, I sprayed the edges so the folded over vinyl would stick on the back side. Cut out the holes for the car seat anchors and snapped them back in. Took about an hour for both panels. Hopefully on our next trip with our two big dogs, the hair and wet dog smell won't stick to the seat backs.

I do have to give credit to AlexJet over on 120 for the idea. Also, keep in mind, I'm not a professional upholsterer!

Great idea, but IMO the color is pretty off. I would have done it in black or something to match the cargo area cover. But again, just my opinion.

Also, is it just clips to get those panels off?

To each their own! I was really more concerned with the function of it plus it was the closest color from the scrap bin at the place I got it. But to answer your question, yes, they pop in and out easily by a clip. Here is what they look like.

Nice work, props for seeing a problem and figuring out a way to solve it. I had thought about doing something similar with my 03 back in the day
 
You could also do a herculiner roll-on bedliner in the interior. Pull the carpet and roll this stuff on. We did this on the gen2 4runner and it worked pretty well, but you will see all the contours of the floor so you'll have to run a floormat over it (like your weather tech ones) to still look civil.
 
Hello. 3rd gen here. I was hoping for a prefab solution to the carpeting as well but didn't find much so I was looking to roll/spray a some monstaliner but was wondering if it would benefit from insulation then liner? Spray foam? Styrofoam lol?....
