I have been having a very loud rubbing and grinding noise when i make a fast sharp turn with my 03 4runner and i can not find out what it is. It is driving me nuts. Any ideas any one go threw this before?

You probably need to grease the steering stops, that's what it was on mine. Only happens at lock and near lock conditions. You can also go to the dealer and buy the original plastic caps which wear off.:cheers:

it kinda sounds more like a rubbing noise. It doesent do it in reverse but it is definently only at full lock or close to it. wheree are those stops exactly and does anyone know the part number for those caps

I don't know the part number but it can be obtained at one of your local Toyota dealers. I have looked through all the pictures I have of the 4th gen front end and can't find a picture for you. I would suggest turning the steering wheel all the way to one side and crawling under to take a look at what stops the steering from turning further. If that wont work the dealer can show you better pictures than the service manual provides.:cheers:

When ever I make a left turn i hear a terrible rubbing noise coming from the left front side of the truck. It doesnt make the noise when going forward, and I am almost positive it doesn't do it going right, only left. Could something be loose and causing a grinding rubbing sound? It almost sounds like something is moving in a circle while rubbing. It is embarrassing to drive and have my 4R make that noise.

Try some grease. The pic below is the drivers' side. The passenger side is the same and needs grease too.
This is the "stop" for the steering limit. When at the limit or very near the limit a minor bump causes the this area to rub the LCA (lower control arm) and make the noise you don't like.

Thanks for the picture. Does that just get covered in grease? No zerk anywhere? I will take a look at it in the morning, but it seems like it should have a rubber bushing or something similar.

No zerk, no rubber boot just metal-on-grease-on-metal... I just dab a little on when I change my oil. I put the equivalent of 1 pump from a standard grease gun (or a little less).

Does the Grease have to be applied with a grease gun, or can it be applied by hand by just rubbing the grease?
And if you can do it by hand, how much and where do you grease. I want to get rid of this terrible/embarrassing noise ASAP.

I usually take 1-2 pump out of the grease gun onto my gloved finger and then wipe the surface shown in the pic. Good luck!

I just applied what I think is well more then 1-2 pumps of grease to my steering limit stop and i still get the terrible rubbing noise. It sounds like someone is taking two metal discs and rubbing them together. It only happens when I make a left turn going above, say 20 mph, very slow left turns do not cause a noise to be made, and right turns never make a noise. I am out of ideas on what this could be and I do not want to go spend $100 for a mechanic to look at it and maybe not know what it is either, or be an easy do it yourself fix.Could it be my brakes? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

How would I go about checking the wheel beraings, and what should I look for? I am a handy guy, but do not know alot about cars. If I had instructions I could definitely figure it out.

Unless you've done a lot of fjording the wheel bearing on an '06 is unlikely but possible...
In the early stages of failure noise is about the only way to tell. The problem is, especially on a 4wd, there are many potential sources for noise (bearings, CV Joints, loose lugnuts, brake caliper not fully releasing). If it's farther along the failure path you could jack it up and grab the top and bottom of the tire looking for play. A loose, failling bearing would feel as though all the lugnuts were half a turn looser than snug (if that makes sense).

WHEEL BEARINGS! We had a wheel bearing go bad on our explorer, made the exact same noise you're describing. Get it fixed or your wheel could fall off!!!
