Rugged tires for 4R

I bought a '05 Sport 4WD a couple months ago and they came with Dunlop AT 20's. So far I love them. However, I want something more rugged looking. I was looking at some BFG AT's (32") or something along the line of that. I have been keeping an eye on the Best winter tires for 4runner thread but all I've seen are tires that look just like what I have. I'm looking for something rugged and adds to the truck.

I'm looking for a tire that looks beefy but that won't be overwhelming. I think a Mud Terrain would be great but from what I understand they don't perform well on snow. So I wan't something that looks rugged, big and "All-Terrain" and performs well on snow as well.

On my Range Rover I used to have Nitto AT Grabbers and loved the look of them and the performance. However, I've ALWAYS wanted BFG AT's just because I love the way they look on trucks but don't know how they perform on snow and other terrain.

I know 32" rub but that isn't a concern so suggest ANYTHING! PLEASE! Help me find the right tire! :awais:

Well I know that a lot of people enjoy their Revos and BFG KO ATs. Obviously, the BFG's are squarer tires with a bit more knobby sidewalls, but the Revos have a pretty aggressive tread pattern as well and aren't as squared off on the edges so you don't get the extent of the rubbing at 32'' that you get with the BFGs.

My brother has the BFGs on his truck and they are pretty damn solid tires, but he says he's noticed that they don't do as well on wet streets.

I guess you could always cross over to fully fledged off-road tires, but anytime you do that you're just about always going to sacrifice some on-road handling and tread-life, and of course you'll get more noise.

I guess those are the two most popular at the moment so far as I can tell, but some people say the Nitto TG's are also worth looking into. In the end it's all about what you like and what you're willing to live with in the performance arena. Not to mention how much you're willing to spend.

I have 260/75/16 BFG AT and I love them. I went with the 32" mainly because of availability. Sams Club stocks the 265/75-16 but not the 265/70-16. I would have to order the smaller ones and pay more. I ran them for a year or more before the lift was on it and I never noticed any rubbing. No sounds or marks in the fender well. I have never had an issue on wet pavement and they are great in the Maine winters. General makes the Grabber AT which looks real similar but I think you might be limited to a E rated tire. (E=10 ply=very stiff ride) I have a D rated (8 ply) and my wife could tell a difference but not enough to really complain. Here are some recent pics of mine with the BFGs.

As mentioned above, BFG AT KO, Goodyear Wrangler Silentarmor, and General Grabber AT are all branded the snowflake symbol for severe winter conditions...and they off-road very well and look aggressive. (Personally, i would stick with BFG AT Ko or Goodyear SilentArmor over General Grabber because i prefer tires from big tire companies...personal preference.)

I would also throw in: Michelin LTX A/T-2, REVOs (mentioned above), and Yokohama Geolander AT/S (very good value!).

If you have 17's Tirerack has some screaming deal on Hummer H2 tires with the snowflake. They have a 275/70/17 that'd look bad azz! I think it's a pretty good tire. A buddy has an H2 and they seem to work fine. Search the size at Tirerack and look at the Goodyear offerings.

275/70/17's will work fine and you can carry a spare. Search the username spaceman for pics of very similar on a stock T4R.

Check out the Firestone Destination AT's on tirerack. They're highly rated, very aggressive and are a lot cheaper than the REVO's or LTX's. I've used all 3 and will take the Destination AT's anyday over the others.

No offense but the Dunlop GrandCrap AT20's suck when you really get into any serious snow.

I get a plug in for my Goodyear ATS's. So good I don't carry a 5th. 45,00 drama free miles. I had both BFG TKO's and GY ATS's on my old truck and like the Goodyears better. Much better in the rain on the road and don't cake up as much in the mud as the TKO's.

They do cost a bit more and you don't see BFG in NASCAR?

How bout some mud meats if you want a cool look?
