Run away Toyotas - It's getting old

Why are all these people coming out of the woodworks? I've talked to a lot of Toyota owners, which includes neighbors, co-workers, family members about their cars being on the recall list and all said the same thing "that their cars are fine and can't understand why there is such a big hype" and even the one with a 2010 Prius said that brakes on it are just fine, even on a bumpy road. Here's a article where this lady is claiming that her 4Runner accelerated on its own and that it needs to be added to the recall list.

Because irrational people buy into the hype. And some people use the hype to their advantage by blaming Toyota for making defective vehicles when they are at fault in an accident.

Audi went through a similar situation in the 80's with a bunch of claims of unintended acceleration. It was so bad that it almost put them out of business. When the dust settled, there was never even a shred of proof that any of the cars even had a problem at all.

Now of course Toyota's situation is different because they are admitting that there is a problem, but the point here is that people will pile on once the media starts building up the hype. At the end of the day, I'd still feel 100% comfortable driving any Toyota vehicle, whether it's a Camry or a Prius.

If this was a problem with 4runners in General, we would know about it here, or on Yotatech before some stupid lady who probably just used the recalls as an excuse for her pushing the gas pedal and running into another car...

now people think they have an excuse for their own stupidity, "Oh, it must be another toyota fault that I put my foot on the gas pedal!"

American Idiot is more than just a song or album. It's a mentality that seems to fit the masses that follow American media and use that media as the only source of information. Research, fact checking, and reviewing other sources is too time consuming for the average American.

I agree. If the UA was a issue with 4runners, this forum would be all over it.

There are a couple of cases here that people have alleged issues with their 4runners. BUT, I'm 100% SURE that all vehicles from all manufacturers have a blip with UA.

I totally agree. No matter what, Toyota will always build their vehicles with better quality materials and will put more effort into each car that they build than any other auto maker. The media is also just making this issue seem worse than it really is.

We live in a it's not my fault society, people don't take responsibility for their actions, get hurt and then look for a someone to blame.

I won't complain about going faster. just gives a good excuse from a ticket lol. The hype has to do with the news covering it. Yes its giving it more fuel to the fire than it needs to be but it is an area in need of fixing. I'm not tried of hearing it as I love cars and love to discus all areas of them even if it is negative. however hopefully all this will better Toyota and all other manufacturers into building good if not better cars and trucks.

I for one am about sick to death of all this Toyota bashing. I think much of it is an attempt by the US government (who just happens to own 2 failing competitors to Toyota) to discredit Toyota in the main stream news and turn buyers back to GM and Chrysler.

I own 3 Toyota products (Rav4 & Lexus ) and all 3 are excellent and the service is fantastic. My last Lexus RX went over 150,000 miles without having anything replaced but the tires, brake pads and timing belt.

NOw I have people telling me "You should trade all of those in before somebody gets killed". Are people really this stupid that they believe everything they see on TV? :moping:

All I can say is way too much media hype involved and the fact that they would interview just about any idiot who claims that they had an issue with their sticking gas pedal. Like the idiot guy and his wife who was on the news a few weeks ago who claimed that their camry gas pedal got stuck as they were pulling into their driveway and it banged up their garage door. What a moron! How fast were they pulling in anyways. Looks like they just want to jump on the bandwagon and get some $$$ out of the whole ordeal to finance his wife's plastic surgery (she looks like she had 1 too many already).

BTW, in the March issue of C&D, they did a thorough test demonstration with a Camry, Infiniti G37 & Roush Mustang. They measured the distance it took to stop at various speed under normal conditions. At 70mph under normal conditions, it took 174ft to stop the car completely. At 70mph with WOT and the gas pedal matted, it took 190ft. That's a difference of 16ft only! So I don't understand how these drivers are claiming that they couldn't avoid an accident. Either they freaked out and panicked or they just didn't hit the brakes all the way. Also, how hard is it to shift the car into neutral? My condolences to those who have lost loved ones, but come on everybody, do we need to take driving 101 classes?

yeah, I agree. I read that Car and Driver test too. There's really no excuse for someone to say they couldn't stop their car when the throttle is stuck wide open. Tests have proven that the car can still easily be stopped by the brakes. Imagine the odds of the throttle sticking open and the brakes failing at the same time! Not very likely at all....probably have a better chance of crashing into a brick wall and being struck by lightening at the same time.

I don't claim to be an expert in much of anything. That being said, recently my 88 F150 throttle became stuck open as I was approaching a turn lane to go into a shopping center. It is an old truck with a lot of abusive miles on it, so standing on the brakes probably wasn't an option, but in the heat of the moment that's not what I thought of anyway. I reached down and put it in neutral right away...it freaked me out a little since it was the first time it happened(the throttle cable finally broke so its undriveable at the moment, although it does idle nicely) but I did what my lack of training told me to do which was take it out of drive! I don't know what these people are doing that are getting in these accidents and I really do hate it that people are getting hurt. I feel like people don't really understand what is going on when they crank up their vehicles. Maybe that explains the confusion when something goes wrong...and personally, and this is just an opinion, I feel like people should be required to take their driving test in a manual shift vehicle and retest periodically.

Here's an update to this ladies run away 4Runner. Looks like her 4Runner isn't suffering from unattended acceleration after all and she is now happy. I wonder if Toyota can now sue her for defamation of character..?
