Ok, so I think this is actually going to start happening. I've had the chat with my wife and she's down with me getting my truck a little more trail ready if that means we don't bring hers out on the trails as much haha.

I don't really have a huge plan because I'm on a budget, but the general gist of things is that I want a truck that will handle moderate off-road situations and still get me to and from work with no problem.

Before any of this, I repainted most of my frame with eastwood rust encapsulating frame paint. It was not terrible, mostly just the welds were showing signs, but there were some spots in the front and rear that needed some extra love. Hoping this helps future rust. I am also doing an internal coating of Fluid Film and spraying the under body every winter.

Initial thoughts/plans for stage 1:

Wheels-- I just committed to a set of Sport Edition 17's because I really just couldn't bring myself to buy tires for 18's knowing that I wouldn't be happy. I like the look of the sport Rims but will probably add spacers to push them out a little. When the budget allows, I'll probably get new wheels.

After I get the sports on, anyone want some 18s?

Tires -- I haven't narrowed this down, but I think I'm going to go with a 275/70/17 to avoid a BMC. I really like the KO2s on our 5th gen, but the price of the Falken AT/3 is hard to beat...I may pick those up unless there are some really good Black Friday deals going on. I also like the Cooper STT Pro, but I don't think they are good in snow like the other two...anyone know otherwise?

Lift -- I think that I am going to start with 5100s all around with a 2.5-3 inch lift spring in front so I do not have to preload them. Also going with a 1.5-2 inch rear spring. Currently working with TAP to see what deals they have for a decent set up. Not planning on UCAs right this moment, but will be considering that in the future budget. With the 2.5 inch spacer on our 5th gen, we are sitting just below factory castor spec, and it drives fine on the highway -- not overly twitchy for our liking.

Armor -- I already ditched my step rails and I will be adding sliders to the mix. I've had a good experience with Shrockworks, so I will likely continue my business with them.

My factory engine skid was pretty rusty and had a couple spots rusted through when I bought it, so I will probably replace that too. Thinking I'll go with a RCI steel skid and add more at a later time.

Extras -- For now, I'll also want to add a CB radio, probably a cobra 75 with a firestik off the hatch. I may also work on some sort of drawer system in the back that will still allow for my Dog to fit back there.

Anyway, I know that was a lot, but hopefully the fun will start soon!

Conflicted on wheels...

Just got the Sport 17's and they're in my garage waiting to be refinished. I'm thinking a light gold, or a dark bronze...My wife thinks I'm crazy and likes the black look...what do you guys think? I'll take pics with progress.

I'm now having doubts yet again on my tires. I was telling myself that 275s are sufficient, but now I'm obsessing over the look of 285s...

I've decided that I'm going to start with 5100s set at the top setting and about 2 inches in the rear with 1.25 wheels spacers. I REALLY do not want to have to cut the BM or rub on the Stock UCA, and I see a lot of people saying they don't have BM rubbing, but then others say they still have rubbing.

I do plan on getting off-road, this will not be all highway. For those with experience, am I going too deep if I go to 285s?

My vote for the wheels is dark bronze. Looks great with white paint.

It's really hit or miss where the 285's will rub. Depends on a lot of factors like backspacing, tread design, or even alignment. My 285's with SCS wheels don't rub my body mount even when flexing. A lot of 285 setups probably rub though. Why don't you want to cut the body mount? Don't have the tools?

You will for sure need wheel spacers with those sport 17" and 285's if you want to clear the spindle. I figured this out the hard way.

Thanks for the input, I was leaning towards bronze as well. As for a BMC, I have an angle grinder with carbide cutting blades, but I am not a solid welder, nor do I know any. I'm also concerned (maybe not justified) about the potential for compromising the structure in the event of an accident. Maybe I'm overthinking it, I don't know, but that's where I am right now.

Ok, I got lazy/found better pricing and selections on 18s for black Friday...so I'm sticking with the LE 18s for now. So, I settled on Flaken Wildpeak A/T3s in 275/65/18 LRE. I dig the look, and can wait to add some beef to my ride. I also picked up some wheel spacers and bought 5100s all around and a 620# toytec front and superflex rear.

The waiting game is terrible!

Let the mods begin! I found some time this weekend and got my suspension, and tires done. I think my setup changed from last post. I have ICON VS 2.0 rear shocks now instead of 5100s. Still paired with a superflex spring though.

Setup:
Front: 5100s at 2nd notch (.85 setting), ToyTec 620# spring
Rear: ICON VS 2.0, ToyTec Superflex 2 Inch spring

Before|After Measurment Hub to Fender:
Front: 19.25 | 22.5 -- 3.25 inches
Rear: 21.5 | 24.5 -- 3 inches.

I assuming I'll settle out after a little bit.

Tires:
I upsized to 275 and added 1.25 spacers. First, I really like the look of the Falken AT3/W.

Second, I hate the job that they did balancing them. My wheels look horrible -- they're peppered with balance sticks all along the rims...why did they put them on the outside like that?? Honestly, is there a reason they couldn't use the inner/hidden weights?

Third, they rubbed, but I solved that problem in about 5 mins. Only rubbing the front fender liner and corner lip of bumper.

I got them balanced at WalMart, which is where I've gotten my wifes 5th gen's KO2s mounted and balanced. They used hidden weights for that. I waited around for 5 hours and was in such a hurry to get out of there that I didn't notice til I got home. I think I'm going to go somewhere else and have them rebalanced. Maybe at the same time I get my alignment. It's so ugly...plus, say goodbye to balance if a rim scrapes a rock.

Pictures are right when I bought the truck and right after lift was done. Pics of whole shibang coming tomorrow when I have some daylight.

Couple extra pics:

The only "daylight" I had today was in my work garage, so this is all I have of the whole truck:

<IMG width="40%" src="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12358189/IMG_20161219_073620.jpg"/>

The XREAS shock was pretty much fully extended when the wheels were off the ground. When I loosened the lower shock mount the LCA actually moved lower on it's own, I didn't have to coerce it. Needless to say, that wasn't the case at all on the way back in. After I saw this, I was worried I was going to have way too much lift. It all worked out though.

<IMG width="40%" src="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12358189/IMG_20161217_193430.jpg"/>

Icons looking good.

<IMG width="40%" src="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12358189/IMG_20161217_231738.jpg"/>

CV Angle on level surface.

The wheels poke out a little. I think it's just the right amount. I really like it.

Quick update on my tires and lift combo in regard to mpg, because it seems to be the thing people ask so often!!

First full week of driving 18.66 MPG adjusted for tire size.

As a reminder I'm running Falken AT3Ws LT275/65/18 (almost 60lbs per) and about a 3/2 lift.

I drive a hilly backroad for 9 miles each way to work and 20 mi of I270 in MD stop and go.

Good from far, far from good.

So I did a little rainy day project and dipped my grill. Unfortunately, I thought I dried the rain off well with a rag then a blow dryer, but I still got a couple spots that dropped water...Ugh. Fortunately, it's Plasti dip so I'll redo it when I have the time. Looks good from a couple feet. Upon closer inspection, not so much.

I'm also thinking of doing the middle section along the bottom, and one day the grill will get the Satoshi treatment.

I bought the Falken AT3's as well. Three of the five tires took a good chunk of weight to get them balanced. Mine are 265/70/17's on 17x9 -12 wheels.

Good looking truck! I ended up taking it to another shop and asked specifically for interior weights. They also said that 3/4 tires took a lot of weight, but with E rated AT tires, they didn't find that out of the ordinary. Either way, it rides perfectly still and looks so much better!

Busy weekend

With Sleeter heading up a sweet trip in April, I've been motivated to get my 4th gen ready to go for her first adventure. I ordered my shrockworks sliders last week which will hopefully get here by the third week of March. Can't wait!

This weekend though, I took the initiative to replace my spare tire winch which was seized and while down there I relocated my breather. I've had all the necessary parts for a while, just been dragging my feet...The winch was a royal PITA. I didn't have to cut any bolts, but good god it's a tight fit, especially since the bolt heads were all rusty and not fitting well. Moral of this story was...I never want to do this again...Haha.

I also got about 90% of my CB install done. My mount was supposed to be delivered yesterday so I got started but it didn't end up coming...Shoot. oh well. I went with the same setup as my 5th gen: Cobra 75 with a Diamond K400 hatch mount. I mounted it under the center console and ram the connection into the console. Coax is routed under the seat and carpet over to the driver's side kick plates. Up through them, fished through the rear quarter panel over to the hatch. I really like this because it stays incognito.

Pics below:

Cargo Box Project

I'm starting to do a rear cargo project. My plan is to make a split design, but not exactly 50/50. Sorry, I don't have all the fancy CAD drawings that others have done.

The driver's side is going to be narrower and taller. I'm planning on the height to be flush with the wheel well. The objective of the DS is to have a larger drawer, a working surface and tie downs for a cooler (one day a fridge) to mount.

The passenger side will be wider and shorter so my dog (GSD) still has space to relax. This box will only be about 6 inches tall. Since the drawer will be about 30 inches, I plan on utilizing the back section as additional storage via flip up access.

One thing I had questions about when researching what I wanted to do was mounting points. I really had a hard time seeing where people were accomplishing this. In my pic you can see I used the 2 factory point behind the seats, and then I used 2 bolts through the body on the high points near the trunk. I also plan on suring it up with turnbuckles on the rear tie downs.

Hoping this will be done in a couple weeks. I haven't decided what I'm going to coat the surface with yet.

Sorry for the crappy phone pic. More updates to come.

Supplies:

3/4 plywood
(2) 30 inch heavy duty lock in/out slides (amazon only $121 each...hopefully they aren't total crap!)
28 inch 150lb slide
Piano hinges

Sliders are on and Drawers are done!

I will add more pics later as well as some feedback on my slider install. I'm really hating that all of my public pictures were made private because dropbox eliminated public links...so now I'm working on getting pics hosted again. I have a pic of my drawers right now. There is actually a filler plate on that right side to give my dog more surface area, just didn't snap a pic yet.

These are getting some real world testing this weekend in GWNF, and they're already all loaded up. It's also going to be my first outing in my 4th gen, so I'm pretty excited to get her dirty!

Finally got around to snapping some pics of my boxes. Sorry it took forever. So far it's gotten a few real world uses. Camping, it worked great and my pup fit no problem on the low side. Then everyday use, going to the store, it's nice being able to use the big drawer to keep things separate.

Well, I got rear ended today with my son in the car. Fortunately it was at a pretty slow speed. I had to emergency brake twice today...One on the highway when a few cars ahead seemed to have broken down and was suddenly going 25mph, and another when I was 2 blocks from home when a few cars ahead decided to make a last minute left turn. I was pretty pleased with my brakes, but I'm definitely going to buy front 5th gen calipers. My wifes 5th gen feels so much more solid under hard braking. Either way, if I had those 5th gen brakes, maybe the guy behind me would have hit us harder.

Fortunately, my d-ring on my hitch took the hit, so I have no body damage. Dropping it off with Toyota this morning to see if there's any issue with the frame, just in case.

Pic of subaru that hit me. No pic of mine, as it just looks like a 4runner bumper :D

Love it. :bigok: I've always had a thing for the Urban Runners since they were the only 4th Gens you could get in Blizzard Pearl (I believe).
