I removed the rusted out running boards from my '99 SR5 and replaced the end caps. All well and good but my wife had a stroke and can no longer climb in. There is a set of Gen 5/Trail boards available locally. Will they fit or can they modified to fit? Thanks in advance for your help.

I can go measure the mointing points when I get a minute today, but I doubt it. My 5th gen didn't come with them but they mount to the frame I think, whereas 3rd gen has brackets.

I have my SR-5 take-offs. But I have the larger Limited-style fender flares, so I’m not sure if they’ll work for you. PM me if interested.

Here are some photos.
You could probably cut off the end caps pretty easily. Rattle can the brackets with some rust-oleum paint. I also have the mounting bolts. Surface rust like those brackets.
I looked at the running boards today. The do have brackets or hangers. they are intended to mount flush to the under carriage but may serve as hangers. To use them as hangers (as on the Gen3) spacers will be needed. The spacers also provide for and aft adjustment. I have possession of the runningboards, with return option if it does not work out.
I am open to any and all suggestions, warnings, and tips from all sources. BTW, these were advertised as "off a Gen5/2014 "Trail". They may be after market. I will post a pic as soon as I can.

A black stained 2x8 cut to size makes a nice running board. You just need to find a set of the original 3rd gen hangers if you don't still have yours.
I think they look better than the originals, others will disagree I am sure - but they are functional and strong and won't rust.

I doubt the hangers for the 5th gen running boards will work to bolt up to your 3rd gen. You’ll likely find the brackets don’t line up, the bracket bolt holes aren’t spaced correctly, and the brackets will place the running boards in the wrong location on at least one of the 3 axis. If you can get them for cheap and want to fool around then by all means go for it, but be aware that a lot has to go right in order to use them without modifications.
Part of me is horrified by this and part of me is hugely impressed. It actually looks pretty good and wooden boards are really no stranger to work trucks when you think about it. With some grip tape or something like that I bet most people wouldn't even notice.
Sorry I meant to go look at mine and got sidetracked but sounds like you bought them. I wonder if there is enough material to drill horizontal holes on the side of the brackets to match the 3rd gen mounting points? Or else see if you can get the brackets off some 3rd gen boards or maybe even find some thick gauge Simpson hurricane ties or something like that you can make work in the deck building section at Home Depot. Either way you're probably going to have to try and remove the plastic top of the boards and drill new holes to bolt the brackets in the correct spacing. I don't think it should be too difficult as long as the brackets have enough vertical space to hang low enough. And possibly drill new holes in the mount points to get the boards level.

Yup, I get that. Sounds pretty redneck.
They were put on in a rush one fall before a trip to Baja, mainly for paint protection. They worked well enough that I have never thought about changing them out. They are on version 2.0 now which is a little more refined with routered edges and slightly better fit. This image was the old V1. They actually protect the pinch weld area better than the OEM originals did, they sit farther in under the 4runner.
The black deck stain matches the rest of the 4runner perfectly. No one has ever noticed that they were not some store bought production piece until I point it out.

REPO--My eyeball estimate is that one mounting hole may work as is and additional holes can be drilled. Drop is iffy. The mounts on the boards are "U" shaped allowing some fore and aft adjustment with shims.
I have the boards but they are returnable. I will do a trial fit tomorrow.

All hands--just an update--The seller gifted the boards. Great family retiring to Hilton Head, SC.
And local garage that I do business with agreed to take a look--keeping my 83 year old body from crawling under a vehicle on jack stands.
BTW, the T/G boards are about half of the weight of the originals. More next week.

I just realized in addition to the "deck plate mod" we now have the "deck BOARD mod" thanks to [MENTION=102449]Kanoe[/MENTION]. It would be too perfect if you could bolt them up with Simpson Strong-ties.
Sounds like wooden boards might be the way to go as a temporary measure at least until you score some boards off craigslist, if you can find some 3rd gen brackets. Someone on here must have some old rusted boards in the garage they could mail you the brackets from. I chopped mine in half and tossed them in the landfill, 99% sure I tossed the brackets too.
There's always the aftermarket option on Amazon but would be a couple hundred bucks at least.
