Running boards out, in or ??

I have the stock running boards on the 99 Limited.
Want to take them off or change out. I like the single step kind and need something for my youngest and mom to drag themselves up and in.
What do y’all run or not? Pics if you got em

Well I think if you plan to slide then ya' need sliders.

Otherwise, the stock boards do a very good job of being a step-in, blocking mud about 98% and i have yet to hit them when offroading yet I do avoid landing over a large rock with them. Then you can spend that money on something else !! :cowboy:

If you use them I would keep them on, they really help keep the sides cleaner too. I would take them off and wash the rocker panels and put a vinyl wrap on the panels or some sort of thin pad. I’ve found the running boards tend to rub the paint off the rockers and then you eat rust holes. Seems worst toward the rear of the back doors/last 3” of the running board.

If you're going to do a bunch of wheeling, take them off. If not, it's a personal preference thing. Maybe take one side off and see what you think. They're pretty easy to remove. I replaced mine with sliders and added some grip tape to the top to help when stepping on.

^^ yup. Grip tape or Bedliner spray works good too. Rustoleum is good and leaves a good grip

Hepar, I like that look. Simple and effective.
If they aren’t rusted to hell on, then I’ll take them off and see. But yea the kids use them a lot.

You'll probably need a propane torch, PB Blaster, and an impact wrench to get them off. Or a cutting disc.

Leave them on if you're not going off roading. The tires will throw up rocks against your rocker panels causing chips in your paint where rust will start.

If you don’t plan on lifting and etc leave them on. If your lifting and going for tires and etc then definitely off. With a lift the boards look really off place.

Here is a cheap in between alternative.

IMO looks a little less station wagon than the originals and provides better rock protection. We drive a lot of gravel so sliders or removal is not an option for me. Plus my paint is still very good.

Brackets are the factory ones trimmed up a little and the topper is trimmed and shaped 2x 8 stained black. Even from 2 feet away most wouldn't pick out that it is made of wood. Has survived 2 Mexico trips and 5 years of use so far with just a touch up to the stain.

It wouldn't look good on all 4runners but I like it on mine.

I ditched my running boards. They eat up too much clearance and I think the truck looks better without them. I don't have any one that needs a step though

I hate the look so I took em off the '97 limited.....every pair of shorts I own have a tear in the butt from repelling down and catching on the seat controls....SS 1.2 lift :redface:

I definitely like mine without - also have a 99 limited. You don't even notice that they are missing after about a week.

I took mine off about twelve years ago after my kids all hit 6ft tall. (GF is 5"11" and voted to leave them off--they got dirt on her pant legs.). Now I have my first grand kid to worry about, but she can't walk yet.

Limiteds have body cladding that covers the rocker panels. So even with the running boards off, there's protection for the rocker panels against pebbles flung up by the tires.

I'm 95% decided they are coming off. I am always scraping my leg on them and the kids just gonna have to learn how to pull himself up into the truck. Mom - i'll just bring a step stool. heck - she's only 5'2" anyway so anything is a climb for her.

I do really like the bar-mod ones with the tacky grip. More what I'm looking for. Anyone ever put the single step ones on like alot of pickups have?

They make bolt-on sliders, so you can remove them easily if you want to.

Took mine off with plans to put tube ones on..... changed my mind and not putting anything back on.
