Running Boards - Painting / Lighting - DIY

I searched high and low to find a topcoat that would stand up to the abuse that the running boards will take. I am hoping that this topcoat will hold up and keep the paint on. I will have to keep you guys posted on this matter.

I just got back from camping over the holiday weekend and my vehicle is covered in dirt and bugs that weren't so lucky. I will need to wash it (probably over the weekend) and I'll take a closer look. I have beek keeping an eye on it since I painted them, and haven't noticed any peeling, chipping, etc, but I will take a much closer look after it is all washed and clean.

I washed my vehicle over the weekend and the paint is holding up great. There is no peeling, no chipping, nothing. Keep in mind that I did you the Por 15 epoxy coating, which has shown to hold up during the winter. I am very satisfied and would recommend this product to anyone who is thinking of painting the running boards.

I purchased the Por 15 for about $40 and it came in a quart and the hardener came in a smaller bottle. I forget the actual ratio, but I only used about 25% of what I ordered. Well worth the money!

As for obtaining the power from the light ring, you will tap into the red wire (Pin 2) and red/green wire (Pin 6) on the ignition switch. I am not sure about the wires that you have near your running boards, but it isn't too dificult to run your own as I described in the DIY. If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Thread revival. The running board photos that started this thread are dead links. Does anyone have some pics they could share of "rehabbed" running boards? Mine look terrible and I am not sure how best to rejuvenate them.

i see pics...they look like a set of running boards with lights on the end.
there are much better flush mount LED's on the market that would be better than what the OP used.

Reviving this crazy old post. I'm not sure if I'm missing something here but I don't seem to notice any type of write up for this besides pictures. I'm thinking maybe the post is so old something got lost at some point. If you can point me to the write up it would be much appreciated!

I don't find anything either. There's a nice one for a Tundra running board. Maybe you can adapt for your needs.

Pennywise did provide how he tied into the wiring for the ring around the ignition switch. It makes the lights work the same as the dome light, if I'm understanding him. Post #18. With that information you can shop for some LED lights that will fit in or under the running boards
