Running boards removal?

A few of my 4x4 friends keep telling me to remove my running boards. This is the nicest vehicle I have ever owned, so I am not too keen on the idea of tearing it apart just yet. However, i don't really use them to get in and out of the vehicle, so i don't think they serve much of a purpose besides looking nice. Would it really give me that much more clearance? What do you guys think? Should I take 'em off or tear 'em off?

yeha i took the boards off of my 97 and i have noticed a difference in clearance. i get a better experience and dont have to worry about dragging as much. about three more inches if my visual math is right. also it makes it look less like a socccer mom mobiel and more like the wolf in sheeps clothing that it is

It does give more ground clearance, but do remember you do get more rock chips also. the running boards do help with those rock chips, road tar, etc..

When I bought my 4Runner I put some running boards on. First off I would say yes, you get quite a bit of extra ground clearance with them off. The 4Runner also has a more aggressive stance with them off. My Wife is 5'2" so I had to put them on. When I put them on, I basically bolted them on underneath with 22 16mm hex flange bolts at 20 ft/lbs of torque, (11 on each side). There is a palce to bolt them on, so you can put them back if needed.

The small problem you will have is the end plates. I had to drill a hole in the rear side wheel well and put a 5/8" screw, which you need to take off. When you take off the end plates, you will need to buy two front mud flaps for the front, but if you have wheel well molding you will have to buy front and back end plates that are not for running boards. In 2001 my end plates cost around $100 when I bought them on-line.

I kept my old mud flaps in case I decicde to change back to no running boards again.

Take them off, I took mine off as soon as I bought it, but if your paint job is 100% perfect dont, cause you will get a couple of chips from rocks over time. But I like it alot better with them off.

i just took mine off this past weekend and it looks great. There is also a noticable increase in clearance.
