running boards (whats the difference)?

Ok so fairly new to T4R, I'll start off by saying this is not being used for wheeling, its a street truck. I have a 1998 2.7l 5spd (not a sport or Limited) I have running boards that have survived some New England salt but are looking like c**p, so want to replace them. Have seen some for sale but trying to understand the difference between my RB's and those on Sport's and Ltd's. Tried the search but "Running Boards" is like asking whos Irish this week, its hard to see the wood for the trees. Can someone tell me (or show in pictures) the differnces. Also are 99 up different from 98 down?

Post a picture of your 4Runner and we cam tell you which boards you need. It depends which, if any, fender flares you have.

But while were on it, why not just remove them all together? They tend to look a lot better without running boards.

I'm up in the frozen North East at the moment and the T4R is in VA. So wont be able to take a picture til next weekend. Unless by chance I have one on my phone (which just died!!!!) Im not sure about the whole whole naked thing, If I was going to cruise some trails then yes but this is a road truck and long distance mover. I put 30K on 1 of the buses last year and want to ease up on them a bit, hence getting something that has cruise and the ability to get around New England during the winter (Wifes family and my Co. Office are up here, so every 6-8 week trip, but had to fly this trip as short notice)

from what I can recall there are small plastic bits at either end of the runners that "finish" the boards and curve up to meet the arches, theres no light on the board but there is some pretty orange rust poking its head out from beneath the plastic.

I believe it does depend on the type, limited, fender flares, color. I know mine look different than others I have seen.

I have seen many pics of people who have removed them but I am unsure if I differnt ones as if I remove these the rear arch has a finished end but the front leads onto the rb. any info greatfully rec'd.

You need flares to match SR5s with the black textured flares. The front flare meets the top of the board, and if taken off, leaves a gap where the body shows. Mudflaps can be purchased to cover that gap. I have ones that would work for you, and plan on taking mine off soon. They are in great shape, no rust. Let me know if you're interested.

You don't need to get new running boards. Mine had the same rust so I removed all the plastic pieces and painted them. Any semi-gloss black will look factory.

Looks about the same with Sliders except you got the step up and good protection for your doors.
But it does look better without running boards.

Anybody know the Parts #'s for the mudflaps for the front when you take off the running boards? I have the same flare/running boards as the OP and want to take the running boards off but don't want to have the ugly gap!

Anybody know the Parts #'s for the mudflaps for the front when you take off the running boards? I have the same flare/running boards as the OP and want to take the running boards off but don't want to have the ugly gap!

I ordered up some mudflaps from autosheperd which hadnt arrived by the weekend so I am hoping that they will arrive today so I can see how well they work/fit. I found them through another post on this forum and then I found a dicount code out on the WorldWideWait so incl shipping only set me back less than $25.

I removed mine and regret it so much, seeing all the frame and cross bars looks like ****. And then if you have an sr5 the flares loose length and look silly.

I'm getting sliders built with the hopes of bringing back the useful step and covering the frame a bit.

Thos flaps you bought aren't going to be the same fit as stock replacements. THose may work for the skinny chrome flares, but they won't match up very well with the flares you have.
