Rushing into a decision on tires.

Here is the problem.

I have "ordered" a set of 255/75/17 GYSA tires from Discounttire in WA. The tires are on backorder, and I was told when I ordered them (Nov.27) that they were due in in 6-8 weeks, but don't hold my breath.

For new years I have planned a nice skiing trip with 15 of my friends, but am very concerned about the 30% Michilin's on my truck currently. I will be driving 3-4 of my friends + gear, and I feel very uneasy about driving a truck on a possibly snowy road with such low tread left.

I am looking for reasurance to wait for the GYSA's or someone to help me pick a tire that is just as good for a reasonable price.


If the GYSA's price wasn't so good, this wouldn't be such an issue but Discounttire has them for $134 a tire. I also ordered them on black friday, so my total package including balancing comes to: $624. An insane price.

All other tires are at least 150+/tire, with most coming in around 180.

So here is what I have ordered vs other options. I have only listed options on tires they have in stock, as ordering any tires at this time will put it past my Dec. 30 trip.

4 - Yoko geolander AT-S 265/70/17 - $752
4 - Cooper Discovery ATR 265/70/17 - $787
4 - Hankook Dynapro ATM - 265/70/17 - $856

I have read about as many reviews as possible, and if time was on my side I would easily wait it out for the GYSA, is it a wise idea to pay more for any of these tires?.


The only ones I have used before: Nitto TG 285/75/16's on my old tacoma, good tire. and Cooper Discovery AT on my work truck, mediocre tire.

I am just having a hard time justifying an extra $200 minimum for tires, that are very similar to the GYSA's (or worse).

I'm not sure how much snow you plan on actually driving on, but I took my stock AT20's (which are right down to the wear bars) up to Tahoe last week, they performed reasonably well in 1-2 inches of fresh snow and on the patchy snow/slush on the main roads.

As long as you're not expecting to have to take them in any really deep stuff, I would feel confident waiting on the tires you already ordered. Just drive carefully and make sure to stop smoothly and give yourself a little room just in case, and you'll be perfectly safe.

The road we are driving on could be bare, or see 1 foot or more. It is through the Rockies.

That being said, I called discout tire to talk tires, and see if they even could get me in before my Ski trip, and he said my GYSA's aren't even due in before March.

Then he gave me a wicked deal on some Geolander AT-S's, and to end the story I am going in on Friday at 9:45am for some 265/70/17's.

Nice, those are the exact tires I was planing on getting, but I opted to just make the stock tires last as long as possible... they should have one more year left in 'em. Let me know how you like those Geolanders in the snow when you get back from your trip!
