Rust how do you stop it

I found this today when I was cleaning my truck. And was wondering what is the best way to try and stop it from getting worse.

Only way to truly stop it is to cut it out.
But that looks like surface rust so you should be able to sand that entire area down to bare metal and prime and paint it. It will hold for like 5-10 years before rusting again.

I plan on having this truck for a long time. Sand and paint sounds like a plan. I should be able to just pick most of the rust and vacuum it out then sand what rust is left?

I was going to tell you to move to the south west, but it looks like you already live here. Did that start after you bought it, or did it come from from a north or east cost state?

I have only had this truck since july. I think its a socal native. I got it as a wedding gift. I believe the rust was there year's before I got my hands on it. Summertime I did frequent the salty air of the beaches for surf fishing and float tubing

I wish I could afford a new door and paint job. But I plan on getting out on the trails very soon. I am sure some dents and scratches will occur. The big concern on the rust is water leaking in the cab and the window not sealing

My step dad. Gotta love him. He has only had yota's his whole life. I grew up in and learned to drive his 91' Deluxe Extra cab 4x4. Luckily moma did accounting for a body shop or it would have been totaled on two separate occasions after rolls. Then he got a 04' Tacoma SR5 4x4 which got stolen in June out of the driveway. Good old AAA got him enough to get 06' Tacoma TRD 4x4 and my 95' 4runner. I race XC mountain bikes almost pro maybe in 2015. He got me this so I can carry all my gear when I travel to big races. The Focus wasn't cutting it some the courses were in more remote locations.

Try Naval Jelly. It's suppose to be a great rust remover.

I've had good luck with POR-15 keeping the rust from spreading, and converting it to a paintable surface.

That looks pretty bad to me. I think I see some holes? Cheapest is to sand and paint. Bondo if you want to fill the holes and smooth it out. Only way to fix it for good is to cut out all rusted spots and replace with fresh metal.

Yep if you plan putting a bandaid on it, cleaning surface and bondo works well. But ultimately plan on either replacing the panel( or in your case door). I was forced to bondo some rust on my truck when i got it because it had to be my DD, and it was beginning of winter. That was 2 years ago and some rust has started to pop through the primer that was applied on top. I knew it was going to happen, honestly i thought it would be sooner. So now time to get to work and cut the rust out:madgrin:

I will hold out for as long as I can with band aid. I plan on having this truck for some time. Eventually it will be replaced

Both Loctite and Permatex sell rust converters that work well on light surface rust.
They seal and convert it to a paintable surface, and work well. Home Depot/Lowes/NAPA all carry it.
