Rust on frame and undercarriage

Hey everyone,

I have been searching for an '05/'06 Sport for the last two months, but have not come across anything I really like (these are very hard to come by!). One question I have is in regards to the undercarriage rust. I have seen some mild cases out there, where it looks like it's only surface-level and a pinch deeper on some bolts. How effective do you feel the undercarriage rust protection would be at this point? Can it slow things down if reapplied annually? I don't think I can wait until the 5th Gen in the fall (which is when I anticipate a flood of '06/'07s in the market), so I might have to jump on things by end-August.

I'll probably be shooting out several more questions before I make a decision.

If is caused by road salt put down in the winter,and was not washed off quickly. It could be deeply ingrained in the steel. Normal surface rust is not deep just a surface coating, and causes no problems.

Yeah, I have rust on mine too... I went ahead and painted my whole undercarriage with rustoleam rest reformer and primer. Figured its beter than nothing.

The best way to take care of the rust would be to clean the undercarrage real good. Then take rust converter which neutralizes the oxidation and stops the rust. Let it sit for 24 hours then go over it with a black epoxy primer! No more worries, that comb will hold up better than the factory coatings. After those two things are done if you want even more rust protection you can go over the black epoxy primer with a rubberized undercoating. All of these things can be purchased at your local auto paint supply store!

I have been driving my 82 Ford Bronco every winter since bought new, and my City puts tons of salt and sand on all roads. Never painted the under carriage or had any special anti-rust treatment done.

Just washed under it with plain water,as soon as it was below 32 F.

The people who see under it say it's as rust free as when new, the paint never held up but it has not rusted away.

You just have to get out there and hose it down good.
