Rust on frame question

Just purchased a 2011 4Runner 4x4, 68,500 miles. I have some surface rust on the frame and would like input on how best to deal with it and how to treat it to prevent future rust? Suggestions?

leave it there + professional grease rust treatment every year. Costs me 70$/year. Only way to go in areas where they put road salt.

Grinding and painting won't even last 1 winter.

I've heard good things about POR-15... but you have to do some prep work but you can try to just paint over it..(don't want to get any on your hands or face, I hear it's pretty hard to get off..)

also seen a youtube clip of a guy who just sprayed rustolem all over the underside and a year or two later it still was holding up.

Por-15 if you wanna do it once. Other methods mentioned require periodic refreshment to maintain its effectiveness. There's also one I frame interior aerosol treatment that I know of but I'm on my phone right now .... Will post it later if no one else does.

There is a product called Depend that reacts with rust and turns it black. Supposedly stops the chemical reaction. We used it at work on non stainless items and it did seem to work, but I have no idea how long it will last.

I live in VA and there is no such industry doing annual rust treatment. I live in Richmond which is a large city/state capital and the closest Zeibert undercoating franchise is 90 miles away. Atlanta is even less rust prone. Not complaining.

OP should google and search for DIY methods. I've been using Eastwood products, such as the internal frame coating with good results.

Having just dealt with this on my old full size GM truck that came from Pennsylvania, I would recommend Corroseal then a POR-15 type treatment.

The best way to apply corroseal on a frame is to pour a little amount into a small paintpan and use a paintbrush or small roller, it goes on milky white and turns black when dried. Keeping the corroseal "clean" instead of using some and pour i back into the bottle will allow you to keep the rest usable for later projects.

If all you have is surface rust and want to make sure it never gets worse, just make sure its clean of any oils and dirt. Brush or roll on Corroseal and allow to dry/cure for 24 hours then you can apply whatever top coat paint, primer or POR-15 "type" coating. It will outlast anything else you put on your frame.

anyone know what the black stuff is on the bottom of my 2011 4runner? Also, is that an abnormal amount of rust? I just bought this vehicle (with a warranty) so would appreciate some help on if this is an issue. thanks
