Rust Problem

I recently bought my sister-in-law's 85 4runner. It's obviously in need of some work. One of the immediate problems was the battery was leaking everywhere. Consequently, there is a good deal of rust damage underneath the battery going down inside of the image compartment. I want to stop this damage before it spreads or completely rusts out the engine compartment. What can I do?

Remove the battery.
Remove the front tire.
Remove the inner plastic splash guard ( if there is one ).
Sand blast / wire wheel / scrape rust off everything around the battery tray area, inside and out.
Paint with POR 15, or something like that to kill remaining rust.
Paint with color of choice.
Replace all parts.
Drive happy :)

Mine was completely rusted away. The battery was about to fall onto the front tire.
I took some scrap steel and pounded / formed it to cover the hole. Welded it in place and painted it.
Works great. Hopefully yours is not so bad.

Good luck!
