Rust problems

How long do you let that phosphoric prep stay on the frame befor you clean it off? Do you hose it off? Spray it on or brush it on?

Not a good idea to spray acid. I think generally 24 hours?

Spend a little extra time with a wire brush/ wheel if possible . It will adhere better and also look cleaner then simple painting over the " potato chips " of rust. I also like to finish my undercarriage in a flatish finish. That way when the old girl starts to bleed fluids , it is easier so spot them as opposed to a glossier finish ....Jmho

I'm doing this pretty soon too. What I got was recommended by a local shop that does this kind of service all the time.

Klean-Strip 1 gal. Phosphoric Prep and Etch-GKPA30220 - The Home Depot

Same stuff as the more expensive brands marketed for car frame use.

I'm planning on using a wire brush on a drill to knock the worst of the rust off, then apply that stuff. Then paint it with this.

Rust-Oleum Stops Rust 1 qt. Flat Black Protective Enamel Paint-7776502 - The Home Depot

I can attest to this. I have used this on more than just my runner. The etching works great to neutralize rust, and then give it a good prime coat. May even want to throw a coat of bed liner paint on after the etching and prime.

okay so I've spent the past year restoring a truck with about the same rust as yours except i needed over a grand in welding by the gas tank and muffler. it all depends on how much time you wanna spend. i used a needle scaler. 10x faster than a wire wheel and easier to use. i also used por15. it works great but make sure to do 2 coats on small areas at a time. then i sprayed my whole frame with used diesel motor oil. fluid film is great stuff i just dont want the whole underside of my truck nude colored from it. my advice if you are lazy or don't want that big of commitment just needle scale it and spray motor oil on it every six months

yes i have my own shop. i used a cheap harbor freight gravity fed paint sprayer. it took a little fiddling with it to get it to spray the oil. i didn't thin or filter the oil

I think I am gonna splurge for the front skids from savage. But you can't see the gas tank skid unless you are under the car, so that one will come from a junk yard if I can't salvage the one I have. I'll see what some phosphoric acid and an angle grinder can do to it.

This is a picture of my drivers side rear control arm which is separated happen last month. I'm debating what to do. This is a 2001 SR5 sound mechanical condition. I really don't know if this is repairable or not anyone's help is appreciated.

Wow. I would start looking for a replacement and definitely don't drive it. Find one with a better frame, if it isn't mechanically sound, swap your stuff into it!

Used diesel oil FTW. Best protection and its free and looks great.

I am low on funds at the moment and am saving up for a compressor. I am ridiculously anal when it comes to my car, so this whole rust removal and protection project is going to take a few dozen hours at the minimum.

i have a bluepoint needle scaler i used an old 6 gallon pancake compressor the whole project. i regret it 100% i should have bought the compressor meant to do the job. so much time wasted waiting for it to refill. i did the job with the entire truck gutted with nothing on it. no gas tank, fuel lines. motor, a/t you get the deal. id expect it to take you much longer.

If you are low on funds wire wheel and fluid film does stop rust very well. Corroseal is darn cheap too as a rust converter . 100 bucks-150 bucks for 90+% stoppage
