Rust Spots On Body

Hello.

I did a quick search on this site and Google and could not find this problem.

2016 TRD Pro Quicksand 53,500 miles

I am in the process of installing my C4 dual swing rear bumper. I was cleaning the hard to reach areas from 3 years of road dirt and came across these small but pretty bad areas of rust. It is troubling to me since this truck has only been on the road for 3 years and lives in SoCal.

I do not believe these are a spot weld area but I could be wrong.

Has anyone seen these spots rust?

You should have a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty in regards to paint and corrosion. I would take it to the dealer and see what comes of it. Who knows, there might be more in other areas that you can't see. Surprising considering that it's a California vehicle, do you spend a lot of time in states that salt during the winter?

surface rust like this is excluded from the warranty, it's actually a "corrosion perforation warranty" and only rust that perforates (i.e. goes all the way through) is covered

Good luck OP trying to get Toyota to handle surface corrosion on a modified 4R, with a hacked bumper. I would try and bust the rust yourself with a cpc compound, wire brush and rattle can.

Have you been on any beaches....has you your rig been through any salt water? It's good that you caught it now. I'd take care of the rust myself, maybe under coat that area.

I was thinking about that today. Never driven on the beach, camped for 2 night near the beach in it's life.

I had the same thoughts about Toyota. I'm thinking to at least get it documented with Toyota so I have evidence of it if something else pops up.

I will wire brush it down and get some nice primer back on it then under coat it.

Also wanted everyone here to keep an eye out in that area. It's just under the weatherstrip.

I agree. Toyota looks at large tires and thinks it's modified.

Good thing I took off the bumper to find this. All I did was take the bumper cover off, no hacking was involved.

I find it laughable that some of you think simply driving down a beach can cause this or come to expect it to be a possibility. I have owned numerous Toyotas, all of which have driven the beaches of Texas many times over the course of years and never once have I encountered anything remotely like this. Unless you are purposely driving through the surf there is no reason that one could come to expect rust simply from driving down the beach. Now you should thoroughly clean the exterior and chassis of your vehicle after having spent any significant amount of time on a beach, but simply visiting one a few times doesn't lead to rust under normal circumstances.

I only drive mine in the salt and snow here in Utah, so I can only imagine what lurks underneath. My rock sliders were completely rusty by the end of the first winter. :rain:

There is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about rust. That is likely rusting from the inside out. Rust doesn't penetrate paint - it's coming from underneath the paint, from the other side.

When I was looking to buy they all had rust in that area quite common

There is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about rust. That is likely rusting from the inside out. Rust doesn't penetrate paint - it's coming from underneath the paint, from the other side.

Having spent my entire life in the Rust Belt, I beg to differ. When you get a stone chip that compromises the paint surface, you most certainly can get rust from the outside. It can progress under the paint from there and get pretty ugly. I would say that the rust the OP has shared is that kind - probably started from a metal clip holding the weather strip on.

You are correct in that the most destructive rust comes from the back side though. The reason this is true is that by the time you see it, it's too late.

Mine has had a little rust showing right at the edge of my drivers door sill plate. I just pulled it up and it was a little worse underneath it. Happily I caught it before any real damage was done.

I just finished sanding that area down to bare metal and (so far) used some vinegar and a wire brush to clean the rust out of the small pitted spots.

Should I use Rustoleum Rust Reformer (spray or liquid) on the area and into the frame holes?

Naturally I’m going to prime and paint the area since I’ll be keeping it for a few more years, and since 90% will be covered by the sill plate I’m not too concerned with how perfect it looks, I just want to be damned sure it doesn’t start to rust again!

I've been detailing my '15 Limited (first time in a long time, sorry to say) and I too found some small rust spots underneath the plastic sill plates on the driver's side. I also have rust starting to show from underneath the tailgate 4Runner housing (where the hatch release lever is) and at the bottoms of my front two doors. I live in NH where we have to drive on salty roads so it's not surprising I have a bit of rust here and there. My 4R's frame has a lot of surface rust and I'm not sure what to do about that.

My truck spent its’ first 9 years living at the beach, surrounded by salt air and driving through salt covered roads all winter. To me it was worth paying $30 a month for unlimited washes at a place right near my office. Every Monday and Friday it got washed, as well as right after any snow they had to salt the roads for...

Earlier this year I noticed some rust at the edges of my sill plate. Pulled it off and it wasn’t looking good at all underneath it so I sanded it down to bare metal, used some vinegar to be safe and then taped off the area and used a self etching primer, several coats of color matched paint and a few layers of clear coat.

When I took a good look everywhere else I noticed the beginning of some rust at the bottom edge of the front passenger door panel which had been repaired after an accident. Repeated the above process. Both areas look more or less like new.

THEN- I sprayed a rust inhibitor into the frame holes underneath the plastic sill pieces and into all of the door panel drainage holes to nip any other rust in the bud before it has a chance to become an issue...
