Rust??!!

Did an oil change on my own for the first time Friday, was disappointed to find fairly advanced rust around all the welds in the skid plate. Further examination revealed rust on the control arm welds as well. Considering its only three years old I have some concerns regarding longevity.

Anyone else see this problem? I'll post pics when I don't have to freeze my a$$ off to do it.

I live in Satellite Beach and already have a bit of surface rust on the underside. It's that damn wind that making this weekend not enjoyable for car work.

I just posted about this a few days ago. I have rust on the rear axle near where it connects to the wheel. It looks like surface stuff, but I plan on taking the 4R to my trusted mechanic to ask his opinion on it (1ENG did say that it was normal as long as it is surface only).

Yes it's normal. When to start watching it is when thicker metal starts to become pitted with rust. Surface rust= no problem. Lots of rusty pieces underneath my '12 TE. Vehicles today use a different metallurgy than the ones in the '60's and '70's and even '80's. Again, surface rust is no big deal.

I still wear my flip flops, although I received some funny looks walking from the 4R to the grocery store over the snow banks

My 1999 4Runner

I was very sad that I had to part with my 1999 Toyota 4Runner with a 2 inch coil lift, and the off road package. black with a hood scoop and rear locking diff. It had 161K miles on it. I had to get rid of it because it was having many issues due to the undercarriage rusting out. The rear heated lines were rotted, the exhaust was rotted, the rear axle rotted to the point where it was leaking gear lube and the final straw was holes in the frame where the rear axle control arms connect. I WAS VERY SAD. BUT NOW I HAVE TO GO JOIN THE TACOMA FORUM. purchased a 2007 Tacoma double cab, 3 inch lift, TRD package. that makes up for the loss of my 4runner!!!
