rusted out bumpers- 2002

A garaged 4runner, in coastal Massachusetts: rear bumper seriously deteriorated during the last year. Looking at other bumpers in the area, it appears that this 2002 year's model has the most problems and is hideously expensive to replace. Comments, suggestions? (Thanks, I have a roll of duct tape and lots of bumper stickers already to go, but this seems more like a problem of Toyota's engineering choice than my care)

I am guessing you have chrome bumpers. They do tend to rust, even in Atlanta where rust is not much of a problem. Is the rust coming through the bumpers to the front chrome?

I am considering taking the bumper off of my 2001, sanding the inside and putting rustolem type paint on the inside. Another option is to put some neat black bumpers to make it look tough. I have also priced a new front bumper, I had a small dent, it didn't seem too bad of a price.

By the way, I think the bumpers start to rust before you take it off the lot.

Thanks for the comment: I needed some back-up before I turned up at the dealership and had to listen to a lot of chatter about what I had done incorrectly or not done correctly. This is the first car I have ever had that this has happened to.

Found out about this forum when I stopped at the local convenience store and saw another same year Toyota with a rusty butt!
