Rustoleum Paint Job (Spray vs Roll)

Hey, I have a 3rd gen 4runner and the paint is getting pretty beat-up by the sun over here, it's almost pink (used to be red) and I don't want to invest in a 6k paint job so I was in a debate for a cheap paint job, rattle cans or roll job. I read here and their about both, overall I personally think roll gives a nicer result but I wanted feedbacks and suggestion's, if anyone has done it in their build or knows where I can get some more info all help is appreciated

Try some rubbing compound first. These reds always turn pink with neglect but compound usually saves them.

Yes but the thing is, I am redoing the rockers, rest of the truck is pretty clean, so i wanted to paint it white

I don't know about your 4 Runner but I sprayed an enclosed trailer using Rustoleum thinned with acetone. I read about a couple of people doing this and was kinda skeptical. But I figured that it's only a trailer. Sprayed it in my back yard using a gravity feed HVLP cup gun. I was really surprised at how well it turned out. The original paint was old so I gave it a good washing then went over it with a hose and scotchbrite before shooting.

If you are not offended by the DIY look of spray cans or rollers...
you may want to consider a truck bed liner, rather than paint.
The finish is meant to be rough, so your technique isn't that critical.
They have spray can versions and roller versions.
I'm thinking about using the spray can version to color my bumpers.
I would imagine you can find it in colors OTHER than black.

I have sprayed a 4runner white with rustoleum thinned with acidtone, bought a gravity feed gun from harbor freight. 3 coats came out great after it cured in the sun.

I rolled the Rustoleum bed liner on my truck and it sucks.

Faded, scratches very easily, just overall crappy.

I've seen some guys using this with great results, it's textured and is supposed to be tough as nails. It also come's in many different colors. I'm going to use it to paint my expo trailer.

Stay away from the rustoleum liner. There are a few other heavy duty variations like mentioned above ^

thanks for the answers, what would be the cheapest/best alternative to bring my truck from red to white? I have to redo alot of rust anyway so I will have to paint it

I would look for a local trade school or high school that offers a body shop class, you buy the supplies and they do the work.

yes i am actually in a school that does that (i am in the mecanic part not paint) but they arent always (open) and they dont do full color change so... anyone has pictures or threads about it. I know macco is cheap but we dont have it in Québec Canada... i seen some really good roll paint job but not much détails on it... same with spraypaint. I dont really need a 10000$ job i just want a fresh paintjob that is decent enough for the money :help: thank you

I knew a guy who wanted to get a job as a drywall taper. He built a wall in his garage, taped it, painted it, and tore it down. Then he did it again. And again. And again. In a short time he learned how to do it and got a job. Now he owns the company.

Your truck could be the same. Forget Rustoleum - it's for yard furniture and not real good even for that.

Get a junkyard hood or maybe a fender. Doesn't matter what it comes off of. Sand it down, buy a spray gun (they're cheap) and paint it. Sand it down and spray it again. Talk to the guys at the paint store and paint it again. And again. Maybe you start buying beers for one of the guys in the paint program at your school and he helps you out. When the hood looks good you are ready to paint your truck.

Take your time, take off what needs to be taken off, tape it real nice and spray your truck. It won't be perfect but it will be an order of magnitude nicer than whatever you hoped to accomplished with rattle cans or (shudder) a roller. If you've done your homework it will look as good or better than a Maaco job (you won't paint the tires).

And you'll have a new skill.

yes, it is all true.. but that price will increase by an easy 1000$ ^^ wich is the reason why I wanted a cheap alternative... I also have to do some rocker work before paint so I have till mid-summer to paint-it hopefully.. but could'nt find much info on rocker replacement. i've seen a few but not some really nice one maybe I am not looking at the right place

How do you figure that? There can't be a more expensive way to buy white paint than in spray cans. There is precious little pigment in a can of Rustoleum.

Auto paint is cheap in gallons - you don't need Imron.

True I wish i had time to study everything their is to know lol.. god, I think ill do my rust work before getting into the paint, I could get a ride to the US to go at Maaco but I heard their paint doesn't last.. I could also invest in a spray gun and everything but how much will the paint material cost me? primer, paint, clear ect? (witouth the masking tape and everything) just in paint material

I'd like to hear what you decide to do about the rust. I'm in CA and know nothing of such things. I marvel at what some of the guys on this forum do here (Replace the frame? Of course! )

It's a hobby, right? It's a reason to learn new skills. A blank canvas. You can't screw it up - it's a mess now!

I would be concerned about the weight gain if rolling/spraying a Rhino/Line-X/Herculiner on all the body panels. 100#? 150#?
