A few smaller mods to update the thread with:
Lev-o-gages, magnetic phone mount, strongarm hood supports, and a Velcro mount for my spot light controller. Also decided to straight pipe it. Exhaust dumps below the passenger seat currently, but I'll eventually route it farther back and dump it over the rear axle.

Dude, get that exhaust out from under the cabin. That's a great way to kill yourself and/or your passengers.

When I go home from college the next time, I'm gonna have a shop bend some pipe to route it out the back. No fumes smelled by multiple people with it dumping under the cabin, so it's not super urgent anyways. Not gonna kill anyone :)

Carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless. Yee yee.
 
But how likely is it to breathe the carbon monoxide from the exhaust without smelling the rest of the exhaust?

Is it worth it to find out where the limit is? CO is lighter than air, while some other components of exhaust fumes are not. It might not be a noticeable issue at the moment, but better hope he doesn't get stuck in a traffic jam on I-26 for a few hours so he can find out the hard way.

I won't be leaving the plastic flares off permanently, just have them off so I could cut the metal fender. I've got 3 weeks until finals and them a trip with my buddies the weekend after, so not sure if I'll get the flares back on before then. The body mount is still very close at full lock, so long term I may look into relocating the body mounts but for now I'll just grind it some more.
 
Love your build! I am so torn between the Relentless bumper that you got and a Demello based on lead times. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
 
Been away from the forum for awhile so I thought I'd update some.

Went on a trip to Harlan, KY to wheel with some friends at Black Mountain Off-road Adventure Area.

It was the first time wheeling the 35s and they did great! Just need to figure out a more permanent solution to the body mount rubbing issue. I'll probably look at cutting and moving the body mount back a few inches. That combined with hammering in the body slightly should make them not rub at full bump and full lock.

On a side note, I definitely need a locker now :)

TRANSMISSION COOLER INSTALL

So I took the 4runner on a 8-hour trip to go skiing with my family and 7 hours into it, the transmission decided to start overheating frequently. So that led to me getting a Hayden 679 transmission cooler to install. Went pretty smoothly, and the trans temp has definitely improved a ton. Very useful mod.

I didn't regear when I got 35s so that's most likely why I was having overheating issues. Would highly recommend this mod to anyone

Okay everyone, it's been awhile since I updated my page again so here comes a lot of posts. There's some pretty cool stuff I have coming to the build this summer so stay tuned!
 
Spring AOP Trip

So I don't remember if I've said it before, but I'm a member of the Clemson Offroad Club at Clemson University. So in the club, we usually take a trip somewhere once a month during the school year. We went to Adventure Offroad Park and had a blast. Didn't get many pictures, but I destroyed the inside of one of my CV joints:








I also beat my undercarriage alittle bit:

With the CV exploding, I did have a spare axle I could've thrown in. However, to save on time, I just ripped the axle shaft out and left the joints in the diff and spindle to drive home on. It was just a cheap parts store axle with a warranty so no harm no foul. All in all, a very fun trip as always.

Spring Break Windrock Trip

My next trip was with a few friends at Windrock Park during our spring break. Didn't get many pictures cause we were busy wheeling :rockon:

It was me in my 4Runner, my friend in his Toyota buggy, and my other friend in his Cherokee.





There was a really rutted out section on Trail 22 when we were there. Got so close to making it but just couldn't. Definitely could if I had had a rear locker. Damaged my passenger taillight hitting the wall of the rut. Oh well, all part of the fun!





 
Club Windrock Trip

The next time I got out wheeling was at the beginning of May with the club when we went to windrock. My Toyota buggy friend tried Stairstepper (forgot the trail #) but it was too slick to get up. Then later the next day he went right on up Devil's Elbow. We also drove all the way out to Caryville Flats which is SUPER cool. It's a way better view than the windmills imo. Then also in that same area of the park we played around at a coal wash area. Our last day there we visited Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. Would highly recommend checking it out if you have time.

No damage this trip, but I did get all 4 tires off the ground on accident....oops.























 
RCI Skids!!!

FINALLY got some RCI skids under the 4Runner. It needed some decent skids desperately. Had the bolt heads break off for the frame support tubes back by the tcase crossmember. Had to drill and tap to a bigger size which was a pita, but it all worked out in the end. Now it's time to go bash them and test them out








 
E-locker is done!

The E-locker and rear axle mods are done! Check out my thread detailing the retrofit. Link is in the previous post of this thread.

Also, I got my front diff with 4.30 gears from ECGS and installed that yesterday. Time to break in some gears! I'll post some pictures when I can get some.
 
FJ Transfer Case Swap into a V6 4th Gen

Reason for Swap
So swapping in an FJ case is always something I had considered but never pulled the trigger on because of how much effort it takes. But, my electronic case just crapped out on me so that has forced my hand.

This swap will be for retaining the factory J-shift pattern on the transfer case and not doing the twin stick mod.

I managed to pick up an FJ Transfer Case from a 2008 automatic FJ for $160 with only 150k miles on it. Luckily this one came with the shifter, cause a lot of the ones I found before did not have the shifter with it.



I have a V6, and most threads for this swap talk about swapping it into a V8, so I'm hoping to create this write-up to help those looking to do this swap in the future.

Why Do This Swap?
The electronic actuator on the factory 4th gen transfer cases tend to leak and not seal properly as they age, allowing dirt/mud/water/etc. to get into the actuator and mess with the electronics and the shifting process. I've always found the electronic shifting system to be rather annoying to deal with sometimes as mine always struggled to go from 2WD to 4HI.

The reason so many people do this swap is to obtain a manually shifting transfer case that has a J-shift pattern (similar to that of a 3rd gen and older Toyotas). The manual shift bypasses a lot of the complicated electronics.

What Do I Need?
I'll update this list as I get farther into the swap, but this is what I know of so far:

- FJ Transfer Case from an FJ with the automatic transmission
- Longer Rear Driveshaft
- Shorter Front Driveshaft
- Wiring harness to connect with the ADD actuator on the front diff
- Shift boot (if applicable)
- Shift knob (if applicable)

Driveshafts
The FJ case is shorter than the electronic case that comes with the 4Runners, so you'll need to do something with driveshafts to make up this difference. Here's a picture of the two cases next to each other for comparison. FJ case is on top and the 4Runner case is on the bottom:





After taking some rough measurements, I found that the rear driveshaft would need to be 1.25" longer and the front driveshaft would need to be 1" shorter.

My current plan for the rear driveshaft is to use a 1.25" driveshaft spacer from 4Crawler Offroad. This can be installed on either the transfer case flange or the rear diff flange.

For the front driveshaft, I'm hoping to take some grease out of the slip to allow it to compress more. If that doesn't work, I'll likely cut the splines on the driveshaft alittle shorter. Haven't thought about that too much yet.

Wiring
To get the wiring to work, there's two main things you'll need to do.
1. Wire up the ADD actuator to a momentary switch to get the ADD to work. If you just slap the transfer case in and put it in 4WD, that will just make the front driveshaft spin. You have to engage the ADD actuator on the front diff to actually deliver power to the CV axles.

To do this, take the plug on the ADD actuator and wire it up to a DTPT switch (momentary switch), 12v power, and ground. This will allow you to flip a switch to engage/disengage the ADD actuator.

My current plan for this is to purchase a wiring harness with switch from a fellow 4Runner guy in NC. Rock Solid Toys does technically still sell them, but a lot of people haven't received parts from them and have been waiting for months. RST sounds like the next Pelfreybilt situation, so avoid ordering parts for now from them if you can.

2. The other half of the wiring involves connecting the transfer case position sensors to the 4wd dash lights. Personally I don't care to have these lights work that much since I'll know what gear I'm in with the manual shift knob, so I'll likely just remove those lights from the dash.

Rock Solid Toys has a pretty good and detailed write-up for all of this wiring for a 2nd gen Tacoma which should be very similar to the 4th gen:

Other
Outside of driveshafts and wiring, the only thing left to do is cut a hole in the floor for the shift knob to come into the cab, seal that up, throw a boot on it and you're ready to go.
