S MODE automatic transimission

Hi all,
I noticed that no matter what speed I am going if I use s mode(tiptronic style) on my automatic transmission, it always shifts or at least says its in 4th gear. Is this correct?

My girlfriends car has a similar transmission(mazda 3), and it shifts into the current gear, which makes far more sense to me.

I order to use the "engine breaking" as the manual calls it, you have to shift down multiple times until you can hear/feel the RPMs kick up.

Does anyone know if this can be changed?

I believe "S" mode turns off overdrive

Based on my experience...shifting to "S" mode simply limits the auto transmission to 4 gears and allows you to manually change gears between 1-5. Basically turns off overdrive (5th gear) for the auto trans.

Please correct me if my experience/understanding is wrong.

I think your right, at first it turns off overdrive. Then if you want to manually control the gear change, move it forward or back. It would be nice if it switched to the current gear but it kinda makes sense that it just turns off overdrive until you manually change the gears your self.

Correct about above stated....and....it has safety features built it, it will not let you downshift if the 4R knows the rpm's will be too high, you will just get a beep. Also, it will automatically upshift if you exceed a certain rpm, so if you have it in 1st and step on it, once it hits X rpms it will shift into 2nd, and so on. All done to protect the engine/tranny.

^^ It good to know that it will automatically up shift if the RPM get too high and vise versa if you try to downshift at high rpms.

A side note...
I remember in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee, the auto first selector was 1-2. It would stay in first until I hit like 4500 Rpm's then shift into second. A little scary at first when your not aware how the system works.

"Eco mode" isn't really a "mode"; it's simply an indicator light denoting optimum fuel consumption. turning off "Eco mode" does nothing more than turn off the light.
