I've had my 4Runner Ltd for a month now and haven't activated the service.
Also, why would anyone turn off the side curtain airbags? curious...
The first year subscription is free... so why wouldn't you activate it?

This may or may not help you. But you may want to check with your insurance company to see how much money you are saving by having this system active on your car. Maybe that will offset the cost of renewal.
I renewed my Safety Connect. It was either pay Toyota $140 or my insurance company $150 more without it. I have no idea if or how they would check.
Anyone else overseas with an LE is your SOS light green?
2011 Limited, bought overseas (Germany, U.S. military dealer) and never subscribed/activated Safety Connect... 14 years and 210k miles later (today) I got rear-ended at a red light and the system activated. Now it won't turn off. It just keeps saying it can't connect to the safety center and will try again. It's about every 30 seconds it repeats. Red light is on, green light is blinking. With ignition off, no red light, just green blinking.
I tried disconnecting the battery - apparently it has it's own battery somewhere. Tried pulling the MAYDAY fuse (#28 in the engine compartment) and the message continues. Tried holding down the button for intervals of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 seconds - nothing. I've googled endlessly on where this battery is and/or how to reset this system. Even called Toyota, who told me they couldn't see specifics for my truck because it was purchased overseas.
I'm about to be on vacation for a couple weeks starting tomorrow so I won't get it to a shop prior to that to have it looked at. In the meantime, does anyone have any pro tips on de-activating this constant notification/removing the battery/resetting the system?
