what's the new ride ?

how do the detailed economics work ?
I suppose you might save $10 a day in gas, $200 month which would help pay for a tiny car of some kind
 
I commute 60 miles a day but I'm not giving my 08 Limited v8, it took too long to find it. To bad you have to give yours up.
 
Buy a cheap high mileage commuter car and keep the 4Runner. I get about 25 mpg in my 850 Turbo and you can pick them up for $2k - $3k easily. And it'a a lot more comfortable on long drives than a Corolla or Civic. Hyuanda's makes a pretty good cheap car that gets good mileage too.
 
Yep ........I'm with JimKW. That's a fine truck Christian. I've got an '04 just like it, and I'll probably never sell it. I've got a '94 too that keeps getting better every year. LOL

Find a little 10 - 15 year old 4 banger for the commute...........

I hear ya on the commute. I have a Honda civic and gets me 38-42mpg. My wife is preggers so climbing into her DD 4Runner isn't good. So we swapped cars and now I'm taking it up the arsch with gas. I drive 110 mile a day (back & forth).

Dang Cookie! That's a lot of miles in one day just to get to and from work. I get mad sometimes that I have to drive the 10 miles to my office, and that's only 2 days a week. I work from my home office 3 days out of the week. Makes me appreciate my job more :)
 
Have you really done the math to figure out if you're going to save. In most cases there isn't any savings.

Buying a new (or newer) vehicle is in the THOUSANDS. It'll take a very long time re-coop that (several years).

I'd be surprised if you save any money by buying a smaller more economical vehicle....Very surprised.

I agree. Christian, do the math before you make any big decision. When I purchased my 4Runner, I had the opportunity to get a used RAV4. The difference was like $3-$4K. The extra gas I would use on the 4Runner didn't justify me getting the RAV4 based on mpg ratings.

The truck will go - no way around it.

I'd love to ride my motorcycle to work, but I have to take the kid to school on my way - so beside vacation weeks - it won't happen.

Don't sell it, you'll never be happy without it. It's warrantied till 100K miles and only has 26K. Very bad idea to unload.

IMO, I'd keep the Runner for weekend/off days. Buy a used Corolla/Civic/Accord/Camry. Trust me in a year you'll be looking to buy another Runner.
 
I'm betting we're going to see more stories like this as gas hits $4+ then $5+

I only bought now because I was so damn impatient, otherwise I bet we'd see some good deals on SUVs in a couple more years.
 
I agree with the commuter car theory! I had a perfect Gen3 that I sold to pay off bills while building our house 3.5 years ago and missed it since the day it drove away! I now have my Gen4 and won't give it up! I only commute 32 miles per day, but bought a 1998 Ford Escort for $500 to handle that duty. I couldn't pass it up... it's clean, VERY cheap to own, and I'm averaging 32mpg with it. I'm keeping the daily mileage off of the Runner and I'm really glad to know it's there when I need it or just want to drive an awesome vehicle! Trust us and keep it... it's regarded as one of the best SUVs on the planet! :-). We will, of course, support you either way, but if you have any occasional use for an SUV and can spare a little cash for a commuter, you'll never regret keeping it!
 
Some folks do not do the math right.
Friend of mine did a 3 yr lease on a new subcompact Honda in order to leave his 4x4 truck at home when gas prices spiked last time.
He lives 4 miles from work and never drives any distance.

He's math challenged to say the least. And an engineer to boot.

The further I have to commute the more I would find a way to do it in something pleasant and safe.
