Yesterday was such a bummer! I went on my first real offroading/mudding adventure yesterday. Gosh, WHAT A BLAST! I could do it every day. Went in my buddies lift Jeep Cherokee and it was great. Couldn't take my 2wd '97 limited out for it so I had to just ride with him. Don't get me wrong, I'm so grateful for my 4runner and I love it..but I told myself when buying that I wouldn't do any offroad stuff so 2wd would be fine...I was wrong! Gosh, I want a 4wd so badly now..I shutter at the thought of telling my parents though. Guess I'm stuck with a 2wd for now.. :roadkill:

What, you can't have more than one rig? A first gen or an old CJ will run you 2-3k, and then you'll have a nice street rig and a burly wheeling rig.

I don't even know why they make a 2WD version of the 4Runner.

I'm 17 and this 4runner is my first official vehicle. I had to work very hard to get this one. It's super nice but another 2-3k won't be coming anytime soon. Plus, wouldn't things like tires and a lift run that price way up?

I'm a nooby, take me to school or even point me in the direction of a thread that will if you could. It'd be much appreciated!

EDIT: Ignore the statement above..I hopped on Craigslist and found some sweet deals. Now to get back to the books and aim for that full ride! haha

I can tell you from experience that a bone stock 1st gen has all the offroad ability a beginning 'froader needs. Basic tires and no lift will take you far.

But if the money isn't there for that, get yourself a locking rear diff and get your truck dirty. There's no reason you can't have fun in 2wd, just go with friends and bring a snatch strap.

Consider yourself lucky to have a vehicle at 17 years old, any vehicle. Stay in school, get your education and decide what you want to do in life. Go to college/trade school or get out and begin your career and then worry about getting either a second vehicle or upgrading to a different vehicle. Remember, doing any hard-core off-roading with your daily driver will eventually leave you stranded in the woods and probably without a way to get to work on monday.

You are on a forum and reading about builds and off-roading adventures of people who are much older than you are, have good jobs, families, houses and other commitments in life that their careers allow then to have. You'll be in that situation in a few years, but get your education first. Enjoy the 2wd T4R that you have, keep it in good shape and do the maintenence that it requires so when it comes time to sell it, a buyer will be getting a first-rate rig.

You couldn't be more right, man. Side note, I intended in no way to sound like some rich kid. I am so blessed to have a vehicle as nice as I do for my age. I completely understand that. I'm always wanting to upgrade..One of my biggest issues haha. You're right though. I appreciate it!

98 percent of my "4 wheeling" was done with my old VW Baja Bug which except for rock crawling would quite frankly run circles around any 4 wheel drive.

went up some insane fire break roads, up and down incredibly steep sand dunes with it.

Baja Bugs set up properly are outstanding for off roading and they are still just 2 wheel drive.
Light as a feather with tons of power though, plus a dead flat floor pan with excellent ground clearance.

But a 4X4 Runner is far better than a 2X though.
The extra weight and less power makes it necessary.

My Baja Bug weighed less than 1/2 what the 4runner does and had 225Hp plus my front tires protruded out in front of it so i could literally climb up a wall.
