Safari Rack/surfboard rack combo?

I have been searching the site but cant find any information or pictures, Does anyone have pics or recommendations on setting up a safari rack w/ some type of surf rack built in or added on?

It looks like some manufacturers make add on surf straps, that may work with a basket rack. As many California guys as there are on here, someone must have a combo rack they either made up or bought.

Anybody got something? I really want a basket rack for road trips, and need to strap the boards on top sometimes too. I found a couple of really old threads on here, but they didn't have much to offer.

I had one made for my last 4Runner:

I could take close up pics since I still have it (It has not found it's way on the new truck yet). The 2 bars on top were removeable and the same size as Yakima round bars so that I could attach Yakima gear as well as round surf pads to put boards up top. Problem was that it was heavy, I wish I had it made out of alluminum vs. steel.

If you think about it though if all you need is to put boards up top why not zip tie some round pads to the outsides of a regular safari rack? You just need a cushioned surface, it's cheaper to modify some foam pads vs. a custom designed and created safari rack.

Nice truck! My thoughts have been incorporating pads/straps into a nice safari rack.

I think it was Yakima that made some nice add on straps that were retractable, maybe even locking. I guess I will need to start finding out some sizes on the bars and see which will go together best.

I know there has to be other surfers on here already doing what I am thinking about!

Thanks for the heads up on aluminum vs. steel, I have started hunting around for a rack I want and will go lightweight if I can..

I have a Baja Rack on mine and am adding a set of Yakima Bars using the rail grab towers. That should allow me the ability to have a basket, 2 bike racks and surfboard racks on the truck. I'll post pics once I get it all on there.
