Do we have to pay sale tax if we purchase the used car via private party? I know that we have to pay sale tax if we purchase used car via dealer. Correct? I am in California

Not sure about Cali, but you are supposed to in Indiana. They take the amount written down on the title, and charge 7% of that. The full amount paid is supposed to be written in that area, but you know how that goes......

check your state laws, in AZ we dont have to, unless the car is coming from out of state.

When you go to the DMV to get the title transferred you will have to pay sales tax on the amount that the seller wrote of the back of the title when he signs it over to you.

Thank you. I remember how it works now. I have not bought a used car for more than 15 yrs. I used to work for a car manufacturer and I got free new loaner car every year. After that, I bought my 4runner new. I am ready to hand over my 4runner to my son and get myself an used car. He will get his driver license in 6 months. I promised to give him the 4runner since he was 9.

You have to pay sales tax at the DMV in Missouri no matter what state the vehicle is from, new or used. The link below will tell you the exact amount you'll pay based on the selling price.

Like others have said, you'll have to check the state that you are in. I bought my car in Cali and had to pay taxes on it when I registered it in WA.
