So i finally fixed my VC oil leak! (so far :pray: ) Thanks to finally hearing about the camshaft plugs in the back needing to be replaced! :doh:

But I am now constantly throwing a P171 code....it only seams to come about at low RPMS, such as at idle or stopped in traffic, after i removed the entire intake manifold, looked at every vacuum line, clean all mating surfaces, replaced a few nasty looking lines, added a couple hose clamps to what looked like loose fittings, and now this code is coming back more often now than before i took it all apart! :mad:

So lemme back this story up a little, this is not my first round with the P171, in the past I've always just cleaned the MAF and the code went away for awhile until i needed to clean the MAF again. Now it's CEL almost all the time (after dissasembly / reassembly).

So I've ALWAYS, since the day i bought her, had a fairly low brake pedal ~5" inches from the floor is where brakes finally start to bite, i've flushed the lines (to all 4 corners) replaced all the brake pads, rotors & rear Shoes, and it's never made a bit of difference, even the "professionals" (the one trust worthy Les Shcwab we have), they said sometimes that's just "normal" for the vehicle". I can stop VERY WELL, that short travel is VERY able to keep me from being worried about brake failure, but is that sort of short travel, normal?

Cigar smoke test showed a few small leaks on the intake (Intake pipe to throttle body, throttle body to intake plenum) all fixed, with High temp Silicon RTV, still throwing code P0171 only.

Man that p0171 is a tough one to solve but you'll need to 'go by the book', you've seen the fsm right (pg 228+)? the list is long and wide on possibilities. I didn't read where you tested the various electronics listed below, then the pressures then the physical stuff you have mostly covered. And of course, lets all say a prayer its not the last on the list. Follow the fsm just like a tech would and you'll figure this out. Luck.

 Air induction system
 Injector blockage
 Mass air flow meter
 Engine coolant temp. sensor
 Fuel pressure
 Gas leakage on exhaust system
 Open or short in A/F sensor (bank 1 sensor 1) circuit
 A/F sensor (bank 1 sensor 1)
 PCV valve and hose

In fact I do NOT own an FSM.... maybe i should pick one up, any good place i could do that for reasonable price?

Thank you for the list, very appreciate! i was getting allot of resistance on when blowing smoke into the plenum, so maybe that's a good sign.....
 
So is the Brake pedal travel considered no big deal? (the ~5" inches from the floor), again the brakes feel fine i can stop VERY quickly, but the pedal is a ways down from where it should be....

I'm looking for Vacuum leaks / problems here.

Brake pedal short distance from the floor is Normal for others?

i'm leaning towards a faulty MAF.... no more smoke leaks...
 
Yeah my brakes felt odd when i first got my 3rd gem 4 yrs ago, it seemed like the pedal traveled further down before the brakes engaged compared to other autos i own. But like you said they work. Mine used to be grabby but once i changed pads all good.
 
Try adjusting the shoes first to lessen the pedal travel. You may have some air in the lines so it may be time to bleed them.
