San Diego, CA > Anyone doing their own work?

I'm a first-time 4Runner owner with a 2018 TRDORP. I'm not a "car guy" and don't know how to do my own work... but I want to learn.

I've built three houses myself. I was a combat arms instructor in the Army (.45, M16, various machine guns, demolitions & other things that go boom in the night). My younger self used to perform complex animal surgeries. I know my way around the use and field maintenance of SCUBA diving gear and photography gear...

So I'm not completely incapable...

...but my life has just never included working on or knowing anything about cars. Sadly.

I want to learn how to do some level of field repairs on the 4Runner & have been thinking about how to go about learning. I've seen some advice to just start tearing thing apart and doing stuff. Get your hands dirty with projects.

I was thinking that, before tearing apart my shiny, brand-new baby, maybe it'd be good to watch others who know what they are doing work on theirs... and help out as appropriate.

So... anyone in San Diego doing their own work on anything that resembles a 2018 TRDORP mechanically? Would you mind having me come watch, ask questions, and help out where you feel is appropriate?

I'm in the University City area.

If you're every in the OC area, lots of good guys from TacomaWorld are willing to help free of charge....minus beer and food

I personally do all of my work on my 18 ORP and all of the cars and trucks I still have. I'm Lord Helmet on Tacomaworld if you check the OC threads.

Switched out factory skid for a RCI on my 18 TRD off road, switched some of the light bulbs for led’s and changed out side mirrors for the RAV4’s that have blind spot all. don’t buy into 10,000 mile changes, 5000 max and they are simple, especially with RCI skid pan, only special tool is filter removal wrench(think amazon) watch the videos and dig in

Skalkaho Falls in that second picture. Montana is my second home state, but primary residence in Fullerton. I am always doing maintenance on my wife's 2014 SR5, which she has put 154K miles on. Also doing projects on my '99 K2500 Suburban 4wd diesel and my sons '94 K2500 Suburban 4wd diesel.

Apparently I missed the reference to the roof rack ;-)

Were you the one posting about an extended trip through MT and WY looking for suggestions on things to do? The number of California residents who have driven that Skalkaho Pass road is probably a handful or so. Beautiful area.

Was probably me. I loved Skalkaho Pass! And I hit it at a perfect time of year. But perhaps the goings-on down at Chief Joseph Ranch have increased the number of Californians??

I just wish that the weather hadn’t turned on me; I had hoped to return to Wyoming via Beartooth Highway. Next time.
