Sandblasting rear axle

I’ve got a ton of rust on the rear axle of my 98 runner and I’ve been trying to get it off with a Dremel mostly. Problem is I can’t get the tool in a lot of spots. I have one of those cheap harbor freight sand blasters (the one that’s not pressurized) and I was wondering if I could use that to remove the rust while still attached to the vehicle? Any thoughts?

Don't get carried away with the pressure. I don't see issues.

I have replaced 2 axle housing and have to replace another. I agree that some areas are impossible to get to clean.

I am trying to find the solution to seal off the seal so rusting stops or slows to microscopic crawl. This part is a work in progress..



Sandblasting with a good expoxy primer sealer and topcoat I expect will work very well.

Anything is better than doing nothing.

What are you thinking as a solution to seal off the steel?

That's what I did with one of those cheap portable ones from HF just to reach the hard spots. It worked okay but not great, its very finicky with what media you use. I'd try and find something a little bit better if you can

You could sand blast the housing, and I'm sure it'll do an ok job. You have to get into the crevices that will be a pain to address. Sand, noise, dust, cleaning and paint.

Or you could just replace the housing if you have the means to do so. Your in rust free Sunnyvale! Take advantage of that.
Must be lots of rust free units laying around for you to choose from. You'll save on the man hours spent.

What about some sort of rust converting chemical? I've used liquid blue for a lot of small parts, and it's worked well. I don't think it would be economical for an axel housing, but is there anything similar?

The rust converter are what I am working on. As that's the only solution for my area. As if you bring a rust free one in here.

You will be in the same boat 10 to 15 years down the road. Some environments are extremely harsh on steel..


You can Acid bath to eat the rust off too. You have to stop that reaction too.

But I am just looking into the rust converter and sealer as that seems be the ticket. [ at least I hope]
