Sanity check: pushing and pulling back wheels creates knock

Ok, I am insane, I know. I have been trying to track down this knocking in the back of my rig since I bought it. It only happens when I take a left hand turn uphill on a certain turn back to my house, and even then it doesn't happen all the time, even when I try to make it happen.

I have taken everything out of the truck and put the seats down in the back so I now now it's coming "underneath" somewhere.

I tried one thing when I got back to my garage: on both back wheels, if I grip the top of the tire and give a few good strong push and pulls, I can create come knocking when the truck starts rocking back and forth. I can actually feel it in the wheels, a little like metal on metal. It happens on both passenger and driver's sides.

My question is: does this happen to anyone else when you do that test? Is this just a live axle thing? I never tried this on my FJ, but then again, I never had the knocking sound uphill on the left turn.

If it happens to everyone's or someone tells me that's "just the way it is", that's fine.

FYI, it's a 2011 TE with KDSS.

This is not happening to my current 4 runner, SR5, but I had a similar noise on another rig years ago and it turned out to be a bad u-joint. If you can get a friend to crawl under there while you push back and forth, he/she might be able to actually see where and what is causing the noise. Maybe.

Thanks Jtraskell. That's a good idea.

For completeness, I just stopped by my dealership and did the same test on another TE, a Limited and an SR5. All of them had the same symptoms though it was just a little more pronounced in the TE. I am going to write this off as it is "just the way it is".
