Satellite Radion Question

I have the 2006 Sport . The radio is the 6-CD changer model. It says 'AM-SAT" on one of the buttons but in order to get XM radio I had to install a separate XM unit with a built in FM modulator. It seems every time I find an empty FM frequency, within a week the FCC grants someone a license to broadcast on it. This is also a problem when travelling from one area to another where that frequency may be in use and the procedure for changing to another frequency is not something easily done at 70 mph. Consequently, I am looking for an alternative. Do the 2008 models have the Satellite tuner built into the headunit or do they use this "kit" I keep hearing about. I am not interested in the Scion radio as I want a stock appearance. Do I buy a 2008 headunit that just plugs right in and hopefully retains my 6-CD changer or do I have to get this "kit"? Thanks.

You need to have a "kit" yes. If you want to keep a factory head unit & control sat radio through it. Also this will probably force you to switch the satelite radio reciever you currently have.

Here are the downsides. A factory integrated unit like I had acted like slave cd changer and you have to actually one-by-one go up and down to select channels & did not display information.

There is a company (one that I have not used) that might have what you need.

They say only lexus but Toyota wiring mainly stays the same accross the different brands.

Other option is the spend the $450 and have a dealership install this option for you.

You are losing frequency response by using the FM modulator. To get full CD quality I recommend the USA Spec CA-20 toy kit. If your XM doesn't have an audio out connector you will need to exchange it for one that does. To find out more go HERE

He has an 06' he could just plug it into the stock line input in the center console instead of that.

Your right. Mine didn't come with that so I forgot. So why is he using the FM modulator?

When I first got the XM add-on radio I tried plugging it into the jack in the console box. Granted, the cord was from Radio Shack but the sound was AWFUL. That when I went to using the FM modulator built into the XM radio.

Not sure what you have wrong then because the line input (which I assume you have checked to work properly by plugging in some other device) should not be the cause of the issue.

What sat unit are you using here? They all have line outs and should give decent sound using the 2.5'' jack.

XM makes an adapter that plugs in between the antenna and the radio that will disconnect the radio antenna when the XM is on. This will clear out the radio signals. It has a plug on it also that plugs into the XM unit.

I had to do this in the Explorer I just traded in. I bought it at Best Buy.
