I finally finished the Satoshi grill mod for my 2001. I used a grill from a 2000 which I had from my dad's old 4runner (RIP). The 2000 grill has that large chrome section going through the center which makes it a bad choice for the mod. But I used some craftsmanship to make it work
.
First I cut off that middle chrome section.
Then I filled the large gap with epoxy and began shaping it with a file and sandpaper.
Next I filled the gaps with bondo and continued shaping to make it look like the older grills.
Afterwords I machined a custom mesh out of aluminum and bent the edges to fit the shape of the shell. I wanted it to fit towards the center of the shell and not in the back like most Satoshis.
I wanted to do something interesting with the logo so I machined the old TEQ Japanese toyota logo out of aluminum. After that I painted the grill black. I painted the logo jade green (my 4runner color) but polished the text and edge. I think it looks pretty good. Will post a picture of it on the car soon.
Special thanks to my dad and grandpa for machining the aluminum and doing most of the sanding
.
Pictures below, let me know what you think!
