Satoshi Grill Mod - 5th Gen

I'm gonna do my '10 trail as well. Got the Diamond XXL pre-cut from customgrills cause IMO that one looks the best. Although many people used different materials and had great outcomes, I like the look of the XXL, I may not even do the lower grill.
Also got the TOYOTA emblem from the 80's LC... classic.
I'm waiting on a replacement grill to butcher cause I would like to keep my original for resale or trade-in.
Also contemplating on buying a Dremel or seeing if I can get it done with a hand grinder.

Got mine done today. I used tin snips to cut the grill out then an orbital grinder to dress it up. Many thanks to all forum members for their write-ups/pics/info/ and advice. It came out as good as I hoped.

I think what's really cool is that the dude created a brand new level of body style culture and had no idea about it for years.

Yeah it's funny how the name stuck. It's not like mesh grills are anything difficult or unique. I think part of it is just the Japanese name for the Japanese truck. Something less exotic like "Bob's bumper mod" wouldn't have the same ring to it.

Custom Car Grills Mesh of the Month

Here is mine using the Custom Car Grills mesh of the month (March, 2016) and neoprene trim. Really liked the tighter honeycomb pattern and finally found a grill material was approved by the misses, who is an interior designer and was poopooing all my grill choices on the grounds of lacking OEMness and depth. Will do the bottom grill sometime this week to match.

No regrets, pretty easy mod if you're crafty and patient.

Used a Dremel with an extension (really helped to get into some tight spots) to cut off the old grill:

Used a pair of snips to cut / shape the plastic diamond mesh:

Ziptied the bottom temporarily to make it easier to follow the lines:

End Result, will take better picks when its not midnight. The old land cruiser emblem is by far my favorite Toyota emblem and makes me mega nostalgic. I find the TRD emblem adds a bit of spice and the chrome finish ties nicely into the whole limited flavor :

The Pro grille is plug and play. You just need the cover (goes over your body color grille portion with the Toyota logo) and the grille insert. Quite a few dealers sell it as a set.

OK, thanks to everyone for their write ups and pictures. I'm about to head out to go pick up a cheap hacksaw, some sand paper, and door trim. Has anyone used this thick ABS material? I have both the logo and material coming in today, and I'm going to go ahead and get a head start on removing the grill and cutting the old section out. Mail man gets here in another 6 hours or so, so I figured I'd prep the old grill.

Also, looking at the posts, I saw a lot of you had problems getting the grill off. Any tips on getting those bottom clips out without cutting up my hands? I really don't want to have to go and pull the whole bumper cover off to do this. Thanks in advance!

there's absolutely no need to remove the bumper cover. just use a trim panel removal tool to detach the clips from the front (exterior) of the vehicle. takes seconds, leaves no mark, super easy.

Now just waiting for the USPS guy to get here so I can start hacking up the new grill.
