I went with an older 4runner grill due to it being more simple to use for this mod. However, I'm having issues fitting it onto my 2000. Is there a simple trick to doing this?

Uhh? Wtf? You used another generations grill??? If so, it won't fit. But if it's a 3rd gen grill (they are all the same) you probAbly warped the grille BUT that still shouldn't effect you putting it back on. Post pics or something. Bc all 3rd gen grilles are swapable

He got an aftermarket 3rd gen grill and I fitted the mesh in there. It was a lot more flimsy than OEM so I guess that is a possibility or it's bad fitment from the supplier. If it's the bottom middle tab then I'd agree that it probably got tweaked by the mesh but if it's the sides that won't fit then it's probably a bad mold.

When I did my buds 4th gen satosh I bought an after market grille and it was very similar but the seal around it was half a55. If the problem still exists and now you probably have a perfectly molded piece of mesh, just chop up your oem? Since the experiment and learning is past you.

The grill attaches with some clips that slide into a plastic cone shaped piece on the grill. The grills for all 3rd gens are the same size but those cones are different so the clips wont work. Here is a picture of the cones and you will they are too big to fit into the slot so the clips won't go completely on.

After you shave it down you might be able to use the clips from your OEM grill.

There is a trick to it that makes it pretty easy. You need to press the clips out of the grill to remove it rather than trying to remove the grill and clips together from the mounting holes.
