Scangauge for trans temp on sealed trans flush conclusion?

I have exhausted my brain searching and finding different articles for Lexus rig's, 03-04 4 speed write-ups, ect. Checked the FAQ on here, I'm burnt out. Here is where I'm at, please advise if anything is off.

My dealer wants $300 to do a trans flush, my truck shifts fine, but has 160k and no record of it ever being done. I believe I drained the original diff fluids out when I took ownership last week, so needless to say, trans is LONG overdue and I don't really want to do the "flush" method through a dealer!

I am going to purchase a bunch of WS factory fluid, probably 20 quarts. Just to be overkill.

I read the articles about drain, refill, pull line, drain 2-2.5 quarts, refill, ect ect. I'm fine with that.

My confusion; I don't like jumper wire/shifting within 1 second and waiting for dash lights method. Is it possible/does it work to use a SCANGAUGE 2 devce to monitor for the trans temp range of 97-115 and pull the overflow plug?

2008 4runner 4.0, 4x4, SR5.

I could pull the pan and clean off magnets if that is highly advised as well. Otherwise, it shifts smooth and solid. I just feel this is urgent with the mileage it has. I want to do this right and not be fighting a stupid jumper wire. Thanks for the input.

Yes if the Scan gauge show the temperture that will work, most don't pull the pan, but that's up to you.

Like the other guy said, yes it’s possible. Last year I set my fluid level using a snap on scan tool—luckily I have access to a fully equipped professional shop but I would imagine you wouldn’t necessarily need a 1,200$ scan tool to get the reading. Maybe check online for a cheaper scan tool, but yes, a scan tool that gives trans temp is the easiest way—I didn’t want to do the shift/pin bridging method either. I would also suggest dropping the pan and changing the filter, cleaning magnets. I did mine around 200,000 miles and it wasn’t too bad—worth the peace of mind.

I use a Scantool.net OBDLink MX and added a pair of displays as shown below.

Edit to add: I flushed my '07 at 164K miles using the same drain...fill...pump 2 add 2...repeat procedure. It was shifting fine before the flush, shifts fine in the nearly 8K miles since then. Didn't drop the pan.

I did, however, temporarily plumb in a Filtran Wix inline magnetic filter on the cooler line immediately after finishing the flush. Couldn't find a good mounting point on the cooler return line, so I put it on the cooler inlet line I'd used for the flush instead. I left it on there for a few warmup cycles while setting the fluid level, and the ~2 mile test drive. I'll eventually put it back on, in the correct location. Just wanted to catch any debris that the new fluid might break loose at the time.

^^That looks eerie similar to the custom PID's you can plug into Torque Pro that I'm using. Too lazy to check/confirm.

Great, thanks for answering this. I didn't want to beat a dead horse with the transmission fluid questions, but this is a different animal then a typical trans service for me. Sometimes the internet is a double edged sword, lot's of information, but where does the bullshit end an the facts begin?

Going to get some WS fluid. Got a ton of work to do on this thing, complete system, sound deadening, lift, wheels/tires, moving liner/trimming bumper, LED interior bulbs, blah blah. I'll tackle this probably next week :boxing:

Here is the ScanGauge2

X-Gauge
CANSF
Trans. Temp=
TXD-07E021D9
RXF-032180000000
RXD-2810
MTH-00070064FE70
Name-TFT

If that makes sense to anyone :)...has the 21D9...

Not bad

I just finished this job up. The jumper then shift method works just fine, you just have to make sure you're jumping the correct pins (easy, just make sure you know which side is up on the plug, mine is upside down)

Also when you shift from N to D, stay in D for about a second then back to N (repeat, repeat).

Once I got the timing down it was an easy process.
